SIN REMOVED IN THE DEATH OF CHRIST

Once again, we will be diving into this really popular topic of offerings (sarcasm) but first let’s review our anchor Scripture.
Nehemiah 12:44 (KJV)
44 And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.
I will be continuing with our study of the Tithe. Abraham, who was before the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai, tithed and his children after him. The following is the first mention of the tithe by name.
Genesis 14:17-20 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
In verse eighteen, did you notice the type and shadow of Christ (King and Priest), the foretelling of the Passover, the Cross and Communion commemorating the death of Christ? Interestingly enough, number eighteen has to do with bondage. Abram had just rescued Lot and his family from bondage, but Christ was on the way and would rescue us from bondage. They and we commemorated that miracle with the bread and the wine. Then we come to the tithe in verse twenty, twenty is the number of redemption. Just like David many years later would recover all at Ziklag so Abram recovered all on this occasion. That is the blessing of the tithe, it puts a fence, a hedge, around us, our family, and our stuff.
Now, let’s look and see when God had Moses codify (methodize, systemize) the Law of the Tithe.
Leviticus 27:30-33 (KJV)
30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.
31 And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.
32 And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.
33 He shall not search whether it be good or bad, neither shall he change it: and if he change it at all, then both it and the change thereof shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.
Here we see the command given, written, as part of the Laws of God given for all that are His. This was not new; it just became a part of the written Word. Notice that the tithe is not necessarily the first or the best. The tithe started in the Garden of Eden; it is that part of our increase that already belongs to the Lord. When we recognize that the tenth belongs to the Lord and transfer it from our hand (jurisdiction) to that of Heaven, all the blessing of the tithe is ours. Is it automatic? No! We must know what these blessings are and bring them into our lives by speaking. The tithe started in the Garden, Abraham and his descendants were tithers.
TAKE HOME:
- The Tithe is connected to the death of Christ and therefore the communion just as the Firstfruits Offering is connected to the Resurrection of Christ and us with Him.
- The Tithe is the tenth of our increase and in the agricultural economy it was not necessarily the best or the first. That does not mean one searched for the stragglers to give the Lord it was whatever came under the counting rod in their order.
- Tithing strengthens and illuminates the sacrifice of Christ and our being a joint heir with Christ, with God. That relationship make all things possible spiritually and thus physically.
