COME UNTO THE MOUNT
Thursday – July 19, 2018, Av 7, 5778

Greetings and welcome back to this faith building Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews. The featured picture today is also from Ocean Point, Maine which is not far from Boothbay Harbor one of my favorite places on the coast and where I buy my belts. All of Scripture has powerful messages for our lives and what lies ahead is no exception. As we plow forward let us examine ourselves, determine that we will value the Word of God above all else for God has nothing but our good on His mind. There may be many people in your life that want good for you but let me assure you that none of them can see the whole picture like our God. Somethings in the Word of God may seem like they could use a little fine tuning (very presumptuous on our part) but know it is already tuned to deliver the maximum punch for us individually and for the Kingdom of God. Now, let’s delve into our study for today by reading the primary Bible text to follow aloud.
Hebrews 12:17-21 (KJV)
17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
I want to spend just a few moments on verse seventeen before we move forward into new territory. Notice the phrase “he found no place of repentance”. This is referring to his foolish despising and sale of his (Esau) birthright for a meal. Once the act was done it could not be reversed, there was no repentance available. This is no difference in our lives, once something is done, sometimes there can be a full restoration, but in many cases, it is done and we can only go on from where we are. Yes, we can be forgiven by other people, by God, and so on but the damage remains and must just be walked out. There is no substitute for diligent study of the Word and practice of that Word. There is no substitute for a constant reexamination of our thoughts, words, and actions with regard to the Word of God. When our thoughts, words, and actions do not match up with the Word of God they must go. They must go without remorse and without mercy for it is an open door for the enemy to steal, kill, and destroy in our lives. If there is no Bible example or model stop it.
The next few verses from our text deals with Moses, physical Mount Sinai, and God’s coming down and giving Moses the Law making clear that is not the mount to which we have come. That day in the wilderness after the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea and God gave Moses the Law was the first Pentecost. They arrived at Mount Sinai some fifty days after crossing the Red Sea. This was a physical mountain on the Arabian Peninsula upon which God came and met with Moses. All could see for there was fire and smoke all over the top of the mountain. Just to be clear here, we know this was not God the Father for no man has seen Him at anytime other than Jesus. So, the One to descend upon Mount Sinai was either the Holy Spirit or the Word (Jesus) or both, I would suggest it was both. The Holy Spirit is commonly manifest as smoke and or fire in Scripture and both were present for forty days on Mount Sinai. The Law which is the Word of God and the One we now call Jesus is the Word, the mouthpiece of God. This may well be the same circumstance or combination present in the Tabernacle and the Temple abiding between the Cherubim meeting with the High Priest on the Day of Atonement each year. You can find this account in great detail in Exodus chapters nineteen and twenty.
Notice in verse nineteen the interesting phrase, “the voice of the words”. This was the Word, Jesus the coming Messiah, speaking to this people on behalf of Jehovah (the Father) the self-existent eternal One. This is an unclean people, they have seen mighty works of God as they were being set free but they know almost nothing about Him. They do not know His thoughts, His Word, or His ways. The Words that are being spoken are foreign to them and even at first brush will require a sea change in thought, speaking and actions. This is not a lot different then when we were born again. When we became a new creature, we had to start the process of reordering or renewing our thoughts, our words, and our ways to be His thoughts, His Words, and His ways.
Until our next publication, I speak this Scriptural prayer for your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
Ephesians 1:16-17 (KJV)
16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
