WHO IS IN CHARGE OF YOUR THOUGHT LIFE?

Greetings to one and all and welcome to this teaching on “WHOSE THOUGHTS”. What about this? Are our thoughts our secrets forever? And whose thoughts are we thinking? Are we thinking the thoughts of our own understanding, the voice of other people’s reasonings plus or minus Godly or demonic influence, demonic voices, or the voice of God? There is someone who is talking to us all the time. We call this our thought life. Are thoughts harmless? By the way our thoughts are not a secret from God and our thoughts produce fruit. Our thoughts may be a secret for a season from other people and the demons, that is until our words and actions betray our thoughts and the fruit manifests, the harvest comes.
We are thinking about something all the time, even in our sleep. We are receiving input to our thought life all day through music, radio, TV, conversations, books, articles of all types (audio, kindle, paper, etc.). Our thoughts can be Godly, neutral, or devilish. Godly thoughts are those in line with Scripture. Neutral thoughts are things like thinking about our grocery list, a task at work and so on. Devilish thoughts are any and all thoughts contrary to Scripture. Yesterday we examined the admonition of Jesus to take heed to what we hear and before that how we hear. All seed (words) bring a harvest. What seeds are you, am I, sowing. Let’s move into the following Proverb for more light on this topic of thoughts. Because it is lengthy I will make comments as we proceed verse by verse.
Proverbs 4:20-27 (KJV)
20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Insight: This is not passive listening like a TV or radio in the background or chatter in a Church lobby and so on. This is very intentional attending to the Words of God, intense, focused.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
Insight: We are to be mindful of the Words of God and keep them not just before our natural eyes but our minds eye. And we are to keep them in our heart, our thought life. The word “keep” in this verse is the Hebrew word transliterated to English as shāmar meaning to hedge about, guard, to protect, or attend to according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. So, we see this is an intentional thing on our part. We not God is to hedge His Word in our hearts (thought life), guard it from theft, protect not allowing it (Word of God) to be corrupted, and we are to attend which is to pay attention to and think about.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
Insight: If God’s Words are life, then what is the result of Satan’s or the worlds words? Death! What is most attractive to you, life or death? Remember the verse (Hebrews 11:25) that tells us sin can seem pleasurable for a season. It is a deception of the demons. So, let’s go ahead and choose life. The later part of this 22nd verse (22 is the number of light or revelation) tells us that the Word of God is health, some translations say medicine, to all our flesh. Did you catch that, all our flesh. The Word of God not just “healing Scriptures” are medicine, health to all our flesh. I believe this would include the mind as well as our natural body. The mind is a part of our spirit and straddles the body and the spirit. Remember we are told to renew or minds in Romans 12:2. Well that is pushing out the thoughts and desires of the flesh and replacing with the thoughts and desires for us of our Heavenly Father.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
Insight: Once again, we see this word “keep” which is a strong action word. We don’t keep the Word of God like we keep some of our earthly possessions in a closet somewhere and it is soon forgotten. To keep with diligence means we are not careless with the Word, but we are attentive and persistent to keep it in our thoughts, mouth, and actions.
24 Put away from thee a forward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
Insight: A forward mouth is a mouth saying distorted, hence false, crooked according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. These are people that pervert or ad lib the Word of God to fit what they like or just plain speak, even teach, things contrary to the context and full counsel of Scripture. This is not to be us!
25 Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
Insight: What do our eyes look right on? The Word of God, the Truth! We are not to look to the right or left because if we do, we will go there. We are commanded to not go to the right or left in verse 27. Let’s commit in our hearts to keep our eyes our thoughts on the unperverted Word of God, the Word of Truth.
26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
Insight: We must be mindful of the path we are on; the demons are skillfully deceptive; we must be testing every step by the Word of God. Our ways are to be His ways, and we establish His ways are our ways by being mindful to think His thoughts, speak His Words, and do it His way.
27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
Insight: Don’t look at the shiny objects the world and our enemies (spiritual and physical) put off God’s path for us on the right and the left. If and when we find ourselves on an evil path, we must flee immediately and return our hand to His Hand and our foot to His path.
TAKE HOME:
- Do you give the Word of God your undivided attention with the intention to understand and do?
- It is vital that we discipline our thought life. We have the Holy Spirit to Help and Teach as well as the fruit of the spirit to develop called temperance which is a controlled (by us) disciplined mind or thought life.
- The Word of God received, believed, and acted upon will not only give us the life God intended from the Garden and Christ died for but health from the top of heads to the bottom of our feet.
- Do not look to the right or the left, be very careful to keep your hand in His and your eyes on Him, the Word of God.
- Do not have a forward or perverse mouth, speak only the Word of God.
As the Lord wills, I will return to this study tomorrow. The Lord bless and keep you and yours. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
