DELIVERED TO THE TORMENTORS

Greetings dear saints of God and others and welcome back to this important study of forgiveness and the consequences of unforgiveness. Forgiveness is required by our Blood Covenant with God. If God has forgiven us and is willing to forgive anything in the future, we also must forgive. Harboring unforgiveness is a breach of our Blood Covenant. I left off last Wednesday reviewing the very sobering account of the man who was forgiven a debt that was more than he could ever pay but would not forgive his fellow servant a very small debt by comparison. The master of the servant, who was forgiven much heard of this and called him in.
Matthew 18:32-35 (ESV)
32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.
33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’
34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.
35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
This brought up the question of if our Heavenly Father indeed forgets, has no memory of our sins, or if He choses to not bring them to mind. At what point are our sins totally blotted out never to be remembered? The account of Matthew 18 would suggest that unforgiveness on our part of another will prevent the wiping away of our debt. There is even an indication that our destiny may have changed from Heaven to Hell because it is impossible for us to repay the debt of sin. Or does it just open the door to the demons who have free reign to steal, kill, and destroy in our life until we forgive others.
Before concluding let’s think about sin and forgiveness. John the Baptist makes the following declaration before he baptizes Jesus.
John 1:29 (ESV)
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
The phrase “takes away” is present tense indicating that Jesus paid for all sin at Calvary. At salvation the Father sees us in Christ Jesus, and we are free of sins before salvation. Jesus paid the penalty of all sin. We will not be held to account for sins before salvation nor those confessed after salvation. But what if we fail to forgive others. What if we have unforgiveness of another before salvation and at salvation we don’t forgive from the heart, are we saved? Unforgiveness is extremely serious dear ones. Let’s visit the Judgement Seat of Christ before which all Christians will stand one day.
2 Corinthians 5:10 (ESV)
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.
Let’s say since salvation you have committed a variety of sins but one is unforgiveness. You have confessed the others but have held onto unforgiveness. Will those other sins still be held to your account and diminish your rewards? Now, the unsaved at the White Throne Judgement.
Revelation 20:11-12 (ESV)
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.
Back to forgiveness and unforgiveness. I will now review two Scriptures from the mouth of our Lord, the One who died for us as we wrap this study up for now.
Matthew 6:14-15 (ESV)
14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you,
15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Mark 11:25 (ESV)
25 And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
TAKE HOME:
- All sin is a breach of our Blood Covenant with the Father.
- Unforgiveness is particularly heinous given what we have been forgiven a debt we could never pay.
- Unforgiveness opens the door to the tormentors to steal, kill, and destroy in our lives.
Lord willing, I will have a new study of the Knowledge of the Truth tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
