IN THE YEAR THAT TARTAN CAME

Greetings dear ones in the name of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus and welcome back to The Three Minute Word blog. As we move forward, please take a moment and share this teaching by every means available to expand our reach with the Truth. You who share are an important part of this Ministry. Those of you who partner with us financially are a vital part of this ministry. We are receiving financial partners at all times. We appreciate those who pray for us regularly as well. The featured picture of Donna and me was taken a couple of years ago. We are so blessed; God is so good. Now let’s move ahead to our primary Bible text in the wonderful Book of Isaiah and continue reading out loud. Yes, out loud and you know why.
Isaiah 20:1-6 (KJV)
1 In the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod, (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him,) and fought against Ashdod, and took it;
2 At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
3 And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;
4 So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.
5 And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.
6 And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation, whither we flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?
Tartan is an Assyrian General and Ashdod is a philistine city a little north of what is now the Garza Strip and on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. This is the same general that came against Jerusalem and lost 185,000 men to one angel.
2 Kings 18:17 (KJV)
17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.
2 Kings 19:35 (KJV)
35 And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
As we have seen in our prior texts the Assyrians were used of God to bring judgment on those who rebelled against Him (His people). God also used the Assyrians to bring a judgment concerning those who abused His people, in the case the Egyptians, especially those of Cush, what we call the Nile Delta. The Assyrians themselves became puffed up in pride and so came under judgment, thus the passage above. Now, I will move into the twenty-first chapter of Isaiah.
Isaiah 21:1-5 (MSG)
1 A Message concerning the desert at the sea: As tempests drive through the Negev Desert, coming out of the desert, that terror-filled place,
2 A hard vision is given me: The betrayer betrayed, the plunderer plundered. Attack, Elam! Lay siege, Media! Persians, attack! Attack, Babylon! I’ll put an end to all the moaning and groaning.
3 Because of this news I’m doubled up in pain, writhing in pain like a woman having a baby, Baffled by what I hear, undone by what I see.
4 Absolutely stunned, horror-stricken, I had hoped for a relaxed evening, but it has turned into a nightmare.
5 The banquet is spread, the guests reclining in luxurious ease, Eating and drinking, having a good time, and then, “To arms, princes! The fight is on!”
King Belshazzar along with his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar overstepped their bounds taking from the Temple and being lifted up in pride. Judgment came and came swiftly.
Daniel 5:1-6 (HCSB)
1 King Belshazzar held a great feast for 1,000 of his nobles and drank wine in their presence.
2 Under the influence of the wine, Belshazzar gave orders to bring in the gold and silver vessels that his predecessor Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, wives, and concubines could drink from them.
3 So they brought in the gold vessels that had been taken from the temple, the house of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, wives, and concubines drank from them.
4 They drank the wine and praised their gods made of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.
5 At that moment the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and began writing on the plaster of the king’s palace wall next to the lampstand. As the king watched the hand that was writing,
6 his face turned pale, and his thoughts so terrified him that his hip joints shook and his knees knocked together.
You will recall that the Prophet Daniel interpreted the writing on the wall telling the King his kingdom was forfeited that very night and so it was.
Lord willing, I will pick up our study next week in the twenty-first chapter of Isaiah.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Receive the blessing in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (MSG)
24 GOD bless you and keep you,
25 GOD smile on you and gift you,
26 GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.
