Greetings to all reading this Bible teaching and welcome to the ongoing study of “The Kingdom of God”. This is teaching number 136. I am spending so much time on this topic because Jesus did in His earthly ministry. Jesus has gone on to the Right Hand of the Father and left us to continue His Ministry and to do even greater things (John 14:12). Let’s turn our attention to our anchor Scripture.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
As I have mentioned many times, this is a command by our commander in chief. We are to seek the Kingdom of God and His way of doing first in all that we do. The payoff is that when we are taking care of the Kingdom of God, the Kingdom of God will be taking care of us. I want to deal once again with the word “first” in our anchor text for I think a study of it is so instructive. The Greek word transliterated to English and finally translated as “first” is the word “prōton” according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. The meaning of this word is first in time or place, influence, and honor. You may have recognized that a proton is one of the major components of an atom. The major components of atoms are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Here is the thing about the proton. The protons in the atom determine the nature of the atom, its identity, and its behavior. Could it be that what we put first in time, place, influence, and honor determines our nature, identity, and behavior?
Now, let’s go to our teaching Scripture for today.
1 Thessalonians 2:11-13 (ESV)
11 For you know how, like a father with his children,
12 we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.
13 And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.
The Apostle Paul is writing to the saints in Thessalonica which is in modern day Greece. They were not always hospitable to Paul. The Apostle tells them that he and his team treated them as a father would to bring about maturity. In this case they were encouraging maturity in the Kingdom of God. A way of walking with God that is pleasing to the Heavenly Father. Paul is reminding them that they came along side each of them to encourage them and instruct how to walk in a manner worthy of God. He emphasis that this is important for they too are called, by God, to enter His Kingdom and glory. The glory of God is the manifested goodness of God. This is a huge word in the Bible. Whatever you can think of as good and holy is in this word.
This brings me and you to verse thirteen.
1 Thessalonians 2:13 (KJV)
13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.
For what cause? Paul and his team had invested in these folks and more importantly they, like all of us, are called of God. Whenever they think of these folks they give thanks to God. Additionally, these folks received the Word of God from them as the Word of God and not the wisdom of men. They received it as the Truth, Words good for all people, for all time (and eternity), in all circumstances. Because they did receive the Word of God as Truth it was at work in them like a seed planted will bring forth a harvest if nurtured, and watered. Notice that in addition to receiving the Word it must be believed. One must be fully persuaded of the Words received.
TAKE HOME:
- What we put first in time, place, influence, and honor determines our nature, identity, and behavior.
- We all need someone to come along side to instruct and encourage in the ways of God.
- Receiving and believing the Word of God is essential to it producing transformation in our lives.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
