Greetings and welcome back to this enlightening study of the Bible Book of James. We desire to not only gather information about the Kingdom but acquire revelation that is actionable in our lives. Jesus didn’t come, go to the Cross, go into Hell so we could have fire insurance and live our lives like the world. He came to bring many sons to glory which means we are to manifest the goodness of God for all to see. He came so that the Kingdom of God and His way of doing things could be seen all over the earth. Our lives are to show people a taste of Heaven upon the earth. Let’s dive into our text for today.
James 1:9-11 (KJV)
9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
11 For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
On first reading this passage may seem to praise financial lack and condemning financial abundance. We know from a multitude of Scripture that is not the case. There are no Scriptures that indicate that poverty of any kind is a blessing, it is clearly under the curse. Financial and other abundance is always a part of the blessing of God. Verse nine of our text indicates that is person is a brother, a Christian, and seemingly a new Christian. He/she is now hearing the gospel of the Kingdom and that is the will of God for them to prosper in every area including financial. Let’s listen to Jesus.
Luke 4:18 (KJV)
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
The first thing our of Jesus’ mouth on entering His earthly Ministry is that you don’t need to be poor no more! The word “poor” in the Luke text is referring specifically to financial lack not spiritual lack. I know this puts the poverty is good devils right in a tizzy. So, what is all this about being made low? It has to do with humbling oneself before God, changing reliance from natural resources to God, to the Kingdom of God. In what have you placed your trust. Rich man humble yourself knowing that you and the poor man have the same Master and are to love one another and not be lifted up in pride on the one hand or feeling inferior on the other. In the Kingdom of God, the starting point is the same for everyone, equal opportunity, but we ourselves determine the outcome or our lives. The Kingdom of God is not a DEI system. Again, let’s listen to Jesus.
Mark 10:22-26 (KJV)
22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?
The key here is where is your trust? Jesus is making the point that it is very hard for a rich person who is trusting in their assets to start trusting the Lord, the Kingdom of God. That does not mean they can’t be very rich, it means we do not trust the riches for they pass away but the Kingdom does not pass away. Trusting God and using our assets as tools to further the Kingdom has great reward. Let’s listen in again to the Master.
Mark 10:27-30 (KJV)
27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.
29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s,
30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
TAKE HOME:
- If you are poor financially or otherwise and you have entered the Kingdom, if you will trust God you don’t need to be poor anymore (Jesus said so).
- Being poor in any area of life is under the curse.
- Focusing on the Kingdom of God and His way of doing things
will dramatically increase ones natural resources.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
