Greetings and welcome back to this revealing study of the Kingdom of God. If we want to be the testimony to the world and to each other that our Heavenly Father intended, we need to hear, believe and do according to the Kingdom of God not the world. Then the Grace of God will flow in our lives. Renewing our minds to the Truths of the Bible, the Kingdom of God can be difficult. Most of us have been completely indoctrinated with the traditions of men, doctrines of demons, and sacred cows. Now, let’s turn to our primary text Matthew 6:33.
Matthew 6:32-34 (NIV)
32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
I have added two extra verses to give a little context. Jesus has been talking about the needs of this natural life and how that is the focus of those outside the Kingdom, but it is not to be the focus for those in the Kingdom. He emphasized that our Heavenly Father knows we need these things. One might say “then why don’t I have them?” The short answer is trifold. First, are you truly seeking first the Kingdom and His righteousness? Second, nothing in the Kingdom is automatic, are you speaking these things into your life with thanksgiving just like you spoke salvation into your life? Additionally, you will have a part, but it will not be hard, these things are not going to just show up on the front porch. Third, are you worried about the future, about how these things will come to pass?
Again, I want to bring to remembrance this idea of “seeking first” with emphasis on the word first. You will recall that this word translated from the Greek is proton. A proton is one of three major components in the atom. The protons in the atom determine the nature of the atom, its identity, and its behavior. Could it be that what we put first in time, place, influence, and honor determines our nature, identity, and behavior? So, here is the sobering thing. Our nature, identity and behavior is the fruit of what we have been putting first in our lives.
As instructed of the Lord I now will spend a little time dealing with the idea of seeking first the Kingdom of God. You may recall that Romans 14:17 tells us that the Kingdom of God at this present time is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is instrumental or necessary to the development and expression of these attributes of the Kingdom. We are always the initiator in the Kingdom of God.
Today, let’s take a look once again at righteousness as a vital component of the Kingdom of God. As I have mentioned many times, righteousness can be thought of as having two basic components. One is the step into salvation when we are made the righteousness of God of Christ Jesus. The second component is right doing according to the standards of God. Let’s look at a definition from the Complete Word Study Dictionary. This word is feminine in gender and singular in number. Righteousness increases and is contagious when the right (according to God) thoughts, words we believe, and actions are present. The fact that the word is singular tells us it is up to us how much righteousness we walk in.
In both the OT and NT, righteousness is the state commanded by God and standing the test of His judgment (2 Cor. 3:9; 6:14; Eph. 4:24). It is conformity to all that He commands or appoints. Since God Himself is the standard of the believers, the righteousness of God means the righteousness which belongs to God or to oneself from God, or God-like righteousness (Matt. 6:33; James 1:20). Thus righteousness, in general, is God’s uprightness or standard, without reference to any particular form of its embodiment (expression), to which man is expected to conform according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament.
TAKE HOME:
- The Kingdom of God at this present time is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
- What we put first in time, place, influence, and honor determines our nature, identity, and behavior.
- How much righteousness have you or I chose?
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
