JESUS FREED US FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH

Have you ever wondered about why stoning to death for various sins as defined by God has not continued to this day? There are many prohibitions, commands given by God in Scripture that we do not follow, why is that. Well, I’m not going to pretend to answer or shed light on all of that, but we will take a peek at the whys. You may have heard criticisms of God, or Christianity because of these laws and why they are not followed today or how do they represent a loving God.
For example, not long ago I heard someone ask about why we Christians wear clothing with mixed fabric when God forbade it.
Leviticus 19:19 (KJV)
19 Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.
We could go with what some might see as a cop out and say well that is not part of the “New Covenant”. Or could it be that it was conveying an old message more important than mingled fabrics? Could it have to do with remaining pure, whether in the cattle, the crops, or dress?
Genesis 2:17 (KJV)
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
This verse is not only establishing the Law of Sin and Death but commands purity. This command remains to this day. I am not saying we can’t wear clothing of mixed fabric but that we must be ever mindful to remain pure not mixing the holy with the profane. There is no such thing as too holy or pure before the Lord. I hope that has shed some light on that issue. By the way none of the things prohibited in Leviticus 19:19 ever were to result in stoning, that is a commonly heard falsehood. Now what about stoning to death for sin as defined by God and commanded of God. We today look at that and think that it is a really tough way to go. And yes, it is. However, with sin, death entered the earth, and suffering entered the earth with it. Have you thought about how some people die? Perhaps you have witness someone dying after days, weeks, months, even years of agony.
It seems to me that we, the body of Christ particularly, have a much too cavalier attitude about sin, even sins that are funny and not important. You may hear people laughing about the devastating effects of the curse which came by sin. Sin is enormously serious dear ones. Look at what it cost Heaven and mankind! Verse two of the following passage is the reason we do not stone people to death since Calvary.
Romans 8:1-3 (KJV)
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
This is important because if we sin intentionally, we don’t die spiritually without remedy like Adam. Jesus took care of that at Calvary. Calvary gives us all mercy and grace to repent and have full restoration and be fruitful in the Kingdom of God. Today we cleanse the camp with the Blood of the Lamb of God not our own blood.
TAKE HOME:
- We are to do all we know to keep our lives pure before the Lord, not mixing profane with the holy.
- We must recognize how horrible sin really is and not make it a joke or a thing of little importance. It has cost Heaven and earth everything.
- Thank you, Jesus for the Cross, the eternal Blood, bringing us the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus which freed us from the Law of Sin and Death.
