ARISE SHINE
Video link: https://youtu.be/TImGGxl-vL4
Greetings dear and precious saints of the Most High God, brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome back to our study of the marvelous Book of Isaiah. The featured picture today is of an old Church building in the State of New Hampshire. The purpose for this series of Church building pictures is to remind each one of us to pray for the Church (not the building), the body of Christ. Thank you for your introspection and your intercession. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
Isaiah 60:1-5 (ESV)
1 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you.
3 And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.
4 Lift up your eyes all around, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall be carried on the hip.
5 Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and exult, because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
A new week and a new chapter in this beautiful Book of Isaiah. Our primary Bible text is presented in the English Standard Version (ESV) which is a word for word translation at the 8th grade level first published in 2001. This chapter starts right off with a command. It seems that the Lord is continuing to speak to His people. Is He talking to the Israelites of that time or is He speaking to the Church today? He is talking to the Church; this is a part of the greater things again spoken of in the next chapter of Isaiah. The fact that we must be told to “arise” would indicate that we are either laying down or sitting down, in any case not standing and showing forth the goodness of our God. If the world cannot see that our God is so much better than theirs, why would they want what we say is so great? We are to shine forth the goodness, the glory, of our God. “for your light has come” is referring to the first coming of Jesus, the Christ. For a moment let’s look at the reason folks don’t come to the light according to Jesus.
John 3:18-21 (ESV)
18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Is Jesus just talking about the lost, the condemned, or is He talking about both the lost and the saved. Perhaps you are thinking, “oh no Dr. Wood, Jesus is talking to the lost” (those already condemned). The light is Christ, the Word, the revelation of Truth, of the one and only way to salvation. Do Christians avoid the light? Don’t be too quick to exclaim, “oh no, of course not, we want the light”.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
