DAY OF ATONEMENT – YOM KIPPUR
Friday – October 11, 2024, Tishrei 10, 5785

Today at approximately 6 pm today is Tishrei 10, 5785 and the onset of the Feast of the Lord called Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement. This is the most holy day on the Hebrew calendar for it is the day when by the sacrifice of innocent animals, the Old Testament saints’ sins were covered for another year. It is worth noting that there has not been a blood sacrifice in Jerusalem since the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. Seventy is the number of the nations or Gentiles and thus the time of the Gentiles was ushered in. This Feast or Moed (appointed time for a specific purpose) of the Lord is as God prescribed and Moses instituted in the Tabernacle and was practiced later at the Temple in Jerusalem.
Leviticus 23:27 (KJV)
27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
The number ten is the Bible number of responsibility (ours and His) and seven is the Bible number of spiritual perfection or completion. God was responsible (remember Genesis 22 and Mount Moriah) to bring a Redeemer who would make spiritual perfection possible and man was responsible to accept redemption. This “Day of Atonement” is one of the seven Feasts of the LORD. There are four spring Feasts of the Lord. The four spring Feasts of the Lord are Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits, and Pentecost. These commemorated very significant events and were prophetic of better things to come. The Spring Feasts were fulfilled in the first coming of Christ. There are three fall Feasts of the Lord and they are Rosh Hashanah, the Day of Atonement (Yom [day] Kippur [atonement]), and Feast of Tabernacles or Booths. The LORD has designated these specific days of gathering or assembly for a specific purpose. For example, with regard to us (the Church), on Rosh Hashanah the blowing of trumpets is a type and shadow of when we will be gathered together in Heaven as whole persons (spirit, soul, and immortal body).
The details of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) can be found in Leviticus chapter sixteen. This was not just a ritual act for this Covenant people of God but an annual covering of sin until Messiah could come. We, the Church, know that Messiah (Jesus) has come and for those who receive Him all sin is blotted out forever, no record. This day, Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) was a prophetic type and shadow of their full redemption and ours. Many Jews have received Jesus as Lord, as Savior, and as the Messiah, but as a whole they have not, but the day, the wonderful day is coming during the Tribulation Period when the surviving Hebrews (about a third) will recognize and accept Jesus as Messiah.
Leviticus 16:5-10 (KJV)
5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
6 And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an atonement for himself, and for his house.
7 And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.
9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD’S lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.
10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.
This Feast was and is observed annually and the blood of innocent animals was shed for the sins of all Israel, for all who believed upon Jehovah God. Some two thousand years ago Jesus bore the sins and the consequences of sin for all peoples, once for all (not year to year) for all time on Mount Moriah and in the midst of Hell.
Hebrews 9:24-28 (GW)
24 Christ didn’t go into a holy place made by human hands. He didn’t go into a model of the real thing. Instead, he went into heaven to appear in God’s presence on our behalf.
25 Every year the chief priest went into the holy place to make a sacrifice with blood that isn’t his own. However, Christ didn’t go into heaven to sacrifice himself again and again.
26 Otherwise, he would have had to suffer many times since the world was created. But now, at the end of the ages, he has appeared once to remove sin by his sacrifice.
27 People die once, and after that they are judged.
28 Likewise, Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of humanity, and after that he will appear a second time. This time he will not deal with sin, but he will save those who eagerly wait for him.
This Feast or Moed like the other six has a very specific and wonderful purpose. Each Feast of the Lord is a specific and wonderful commemoration of things past and a beautiful prophetic message of wonderful things which were to come, some of which are already fulfilled. They all shout the story of redemption. In the case of the Day of Atonement we are looking at the prophetic picture of the Second Coming of Jesus, His physical return to the earth when the Jews will finally receive Him as Messiah and are redeemed. The Lamb returns as the Lion of Judah. It is the day of the war of Armageddon and when we the Church return to the earth to rule and reign with Him 1000 years. In that day God will remove the sins of the Jews. In that day all of Israel, every Jew left alive from the Great Tribulation will be saved, that is the Covenant God has with this first Covenant people, His son Israel.
The sacrifice of these animals in Leviticus 16 is representative of Jesus on the Cross. Aaron would sacrifice one animal for his own sin and that of his house, then a second animal for the sin of the people, and a third was let go into the wilderness and was called a scapegoat. Jesus was our scapegoat; He was innocent but He suffered that we could be free. A scapegoat is one who takes the blame and punishment for another. Jesus was made sin on the Cross but that sin was removed by His own innocent blood and the Words of His testimony. Interestingly those Words Jesus spoke in Hell were spoken by the Prophets down through the centuries coming from the Father through the Word (Jesus, the Lamb) to the Prophets of old. He had to declare those ancient Words in faith just as we declare the ancient Words of God by faith to bring change by the Power of God in our lives.
I hope you have enjoyed this very brief teaching of Yom Kippur and its message of the redemption for the first Covenant peoples and the day our Lord steps foot once again upon the earth (Second Coming) and us with Him. We will be fresh from the Judgement Seat of Christ, Marriage Supper of the Lamb, and updated training in the things of God. The doctrines of demons and the traditions of men will be displaced by the Truth in Heaven.
Lord willing, I will pick up next Friday with our study of 1st John. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
