Greetings precious saints of God, my brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome back to this edifying (enlightening) and exhorting (encouraging) study of the Book of 1st John. The Lord is so good to give a Book of His thoughts and Words (Gods’ Policy and Procedure Manual) which teach us the way of salvation. Not just how to be saved but partake in the fullness of salvation. Salvation is way more than eternal life and life as God knows life, but life as God knows life right here in the earth. That’s Bible dear ones! Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud, listening to understand and do, you know why, this is very important.
1 John 3:3-6 (KJV)
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
Last Friday we left off talking about, teaching about, verse three above and our responsibility to put off the old man and put on the new man.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (KJV)
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Holiness is part of the definition of purity. We are to work everyday shedding the thoughts, words, and ways of the world and practicing the thoughts, words, and ways of the Kingdom of God. Now let’s bring our focus to verse four of our primary Bible text. Transgression is like trespassing, being or going somewhere illegally. It is willful sin. Sin is more than missing the mark. Missing the mark makes sin sound far more innocent than it really is in reality. It is lawlessness, it is a spirit, an evil spirit at work. No evil spirit can make us sin or do anything else, and God will not make us do anything.
Ephesians 2:2-3 (KJV)
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
As we finish for today a parting comment on the use of the word “law” in our primary Bible verse. Any command of the Lord is spiritual law and keeps one in the Blessing. It is very popular to say we are not under the law but under grace. That is very incomplete and perhaps dangerously misleading. We are not subject to the law of sin and death. Also, we are not subject to the Sacrificial Laws for they were fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Much of our criminal and civil laws come right out of the law (Bible). All of the Moral Law of God remains in force now and forever.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
