IMMUTABLE – PART FIVE

Greetings precious, Blood bought and cleansed saints of God and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study. Today I will continue delving into the Blood Covenant Joshua made with the Gibeonites and bring this study to a conclusion.
You will recall that when the children of Israel entered the Promised Land, they had crushed Jericho or perhaps more accurately the Lord’s wisdom defeated that people. Following this was Ai but after a sin hiccup they thoroughly destroyed Ai. As a result, fear of them was spread throughout the land. As a result of leaders of the Gibeonites approached Joshua and the other leaders and by deceit obtained a Blood Covenant. Joshua and the princes of Israel failed to consult the Lord. Now some 400 plus years later there is a famine in Israel and the Lord tells King David it is because King Saul violated the Blood Covenant with the Gibeonites having killed some number of them. The Gibeonites required justice according to Scripture.
Genesis 9:5-6 (KJV)
5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.
6 Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.
The Gibeonites required that seven of King Sauls sons be delivered to them and that they would hang them before Israel and before the Lord. We are not told why seven and we don’t have Scripture detailing the breach of contract by King Saul.
2 Samuel 21:6-9 (KJV)
6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them.
7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
The wages of sin is death. As an aside, we see two different men with the name Mephibosheth in the preceding passage. One is the son of Saul and the other the son of Jonathan. The son of Saul was one of those hanged by the Gibeonites. Also, notice this was at the beginning of barley harvest which is in July and August the heat of summer. If you follow this account along you will find that the Gibeonites left the bodies out to rot so that nothing but the bones are left. Finally, King David acts and buries their bones along with those of King Saul and his son Jonathan in King Sauls grave.
Bottom line, a Blood Covenant is immutable and reneging on that Covenant for any reason is not acceptable to God. Justice must be served.
