IMMUTABLE – PART TWO

Greetings precious, Blood bought and cleansed saints of God and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study. Today I will once again be delving into the Blood Covenant Joshua made with the Gibeonites. This is part two, if you did not study last Sunday’s teaching, I strongly advise you to go back and review it. Better yet dig out my book: Awake, Arise, and Triumph – Be Love and review the elements of Blood Covenant.
Joshua 9:3-6 (KJV)
3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,
4 They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;
5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.
6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
As you can see this relationship is rotten from the start. It was rotten not just on the part of the Gibeonites but also on the part of Joshua and the “princes of the congregation”. Now, let’s look at the fundamental mistake Israel made.
Joshua 9:14 (NIV)
14 The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.
So, the men of Israel relied upon what they saw and natural reasoning and did not talk to the Lord about these people. I don’t suppose any of us have ever done anything like this (tongue in cheek). Israel then through their leadership entered into Blood Covenant with the Gibeonites. But shortly the gut-wrenching news they had been duped came to light.
Joshua 9:15-16 (KJV)
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
Before I finish for today let’s take a look at the word “league” in verse fifteen. The Hebrew word transliterated to English as berît meaning in the sense of cutting, a compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh), a confederacy, covenant, or league according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary.
In fact, this word appears 284 times in the Old Testament and is translated as “covenant” 264 times and only 17 times as “league”.
Joshua 9:18-20 (KJV)
18 And the children of Israel smote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel. And all the congregation murmured against the princes.
19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation, We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
20 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them.
As children of the House, when we enter into Covenants we have put the name of our Father on the line.
