MOSES
Welcome back to the Trail of Blood from the Garden of Eden, really from the foundation of the world to the Mercy Seat of Heaven. We have witnessed the first shedding of blood and destruction of an innocent animals body in the Garden on that awful day of sin and death to the sin sacrifice of Noah following the flood. Then the most consequential momentous series of event in the redemption account aside from the Cross, the victory in Hell and the Resurrection. That is the journey of Abraham, the father of faith, the father of us all. I will pick up next with another critical figure on the way to the Cross.
MOSES
The book of Leviticus is replete with all manner of law, but what we will focus on is that which regards the sin offering. I will focus on two places. First, in the fourth chapter of Leviticus; and then we will look at the sixteenth chapter of Leviticus.
Leviticus 4:1-3 (KJV)
1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:
3 If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.
The Law discerns between sins of ignorance (Leviticus 4) and the trespasses (Leviticus 7), which is sin on purpose. Some of the on-purpose sins were punishable with death, others with separation from the benefits of association with the community. Others were satisfied with an sacrificial offering like the sin offering. The death penalty was stoning, and we will address this later. This book is not a dissertation of the law, but of God’s road to redemption.
In Leviticus chapter four, we find that the LORD (JEHOVAH) is instructing Moses on the mechanics, the requirements of the sin offering. This is not the instructions for the Day of Atonement which occurs once yearly, but for day-to-day sins of ignorance. The specific sins addressed here are sins of ignorance. God says the priest performing the sin offering must be anointed for this purpose. Well, what does that mean? This word “anointed” is interesting, for it is basically the Hebrew word for Messiah (Mashîah). In this context, a savior, is the one who performs the necessary acts or ceremonies to take away, or in this case, cover for a season, the person’s sin. Again, we see the shedding of blood and destruction of the body prophesying the coming Messiah. When sin came to knowledge there had to be a death and the shedding of blood in the place of the person.
1 Peter 4:17 (KJV)
17 For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? [2]
You see the Apostle Peter is addressing judgment for the Church and those outside the Church. When I say Church here, I am speaking of those who are saved. He is speaking of born-again Christians who are consecrated before God as kings and priests. It all boils down to seedtime and harvest. What judgment comes to you is the result of your sowing. Each one of us determines our outcome, either purposefully or in ignorance. So, just as judgment starts now with the house of God, so did it then. The acceptable offering was a young bullock without blemish. Jesus was a male without blemish.
1 Peter 1:19 (KJV)
19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: [2]
Without blemish and without spot means that He was the first-born male, and was without blame (blemish, fault, spot), faultless, unblameable. Our Jesus was the first born of Mary, the only begotten (the first and unique son) of the Father, and without blemish – for He did not sin. This offering was to be brought to the Lord, which was always the Tabernacle (in the wilderness). Later, it would be the Temple in Jerusalem; and for a season, Shiloh (see First Samuel). Jesus would also be brought before the priest before dying at Golgotha. Let’s move on in this process that atoned for sin until the annual Day of Atonement, which was for all the people.
Leviticus 4:4-7 (KJV)
4 And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock’s head, and kill the bullock before the LORD.
5 And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock’s blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation:
6 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail of the sanctuary.
7 And the priest shall put some of the blood upon the horns of the altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in the tabernacle of the congregation; and shall pour all the blood of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. [2]
The bullock was brought to the door of the tabernacle and killed there. We come through the door who is Christ moving from death to life. We abide in death so long as sin remains. Praise God the sacrifice was made for me, I am free of sin to live to righteousness in Christ Jesus.
TAKE HOME:
- We enter the Kingdom of God through the door having our sins washed away.
2. Moses codified or organized the Law, the sin offerings and I believe we are seeing Jesus the coming Seed more and more clearly.
3. Even sins of ignorance, then and now, depend upon the Blood to be washed away.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
