KING SENNACHERIB OF ASSYRIA

Greetings dear and precious saints of the only Living God, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit and welcome back to our Bible Study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. God is so good to give us His Word to show us not only Himself but who we are in His family. Not everyone is in the family of God. There are only two families in the earth. First and by far the best family to be in is that of those who declare and practice God as Lord and Savior. The other family with nothing but horror ahead is those who declare and practice the demonic as their lord and savior (provider, etc.). One may exclaim, “I don’t worship Satan!” Really? Examine where your time is spent, on what is your money spent, are you generous in the house of God and with God’s other children, and with whom do you hang out? Please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible expanding our reach with the good news. The news does not get any better than the Word of God. The featured picture today is of Donna and me on a recent trip to Maine at Becky’s Diner in Portland. Isn’t Donna just as cute as she can be!? Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Scripture text continuing to read out loud. Don’t be rebellious, just read out loud. Do it intentionally and with purpose. You are listening to build faith, to understand, and to do, not just to store away encouraging and interesting information.
Isaiah 36:1-5 (NLT)
1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah’s reign, King Sennacherib of Assyria came to attack the fortified towns of Judah and conquered them.
2 Then the king of Assyria sent his chief of staff from Lachish with a huge army to confront King Hezekiah in Jerusalem. The Assyrians took up a position beside the aqueduct that feeds water into the upper pool, near the road leading to the field where cloth is washed.
3 These are the officials who went out to meet with them: Eliakim son of Hilkiah, the palace administrator; Shebna the court secretary; and Joah son of Asaph, the royal historian.
4 Then the Assyrian king’s chief of staff told them to give this message to Hezekiah:
5 Do you think that mere words can substitute for military skill and strength? Who are you counting on, that you have rebelled against me?
Our text has taken a very obvious turn to an event contemporaneous with the time of Isaiah. Like all recorded events in Scripture there is much to learn.
Romans 15:4 (KJV)
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
We see from the text that the King of Assyria, Sennacherib, had invaded Israel and has not only conquered them but is occupying all but Jerusalem. We then see a conversation between King Sennacherib’s emissary and that of King Hezekiah. The King of Assyria wants King Hezekiah of Jerusalem to surrender and ask him in what he has put his trust. The enemy will ask you and I the same things. You have heard him already today. The King of Assyria is not familiar with the great God Jehovah but as you may know or imagine that is about to change. The taunting goes on.
Isaiah 36:6-8 (NLT)
6 On Egypt? If you lean on Egypt, it will be like a reed that splinters beneath your weight and pierces your hand. Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, is completely unreliable!
7 “But perhaps you will say to me, ‘We are trusting in the LORD our God!’ But isn’t he the one who was insulted by Hezekiah? Didn’t Hezekiah tear down his shrines and altars and make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem worship only at the altar here in Jerusalem?
8 “I’ll tell you what! Strike a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria. I will give you 2,000 horses if you can find that many men to ride on them!
9 With your tiny army, how can you think of challenging even the weakest contingent of my master’s troops, even with the help of Egypt’s chariots and charioteers?
Has the devil ever asked you how this thing with God is working out? Has he asked you where the promises, the fruit is? Of course, he has one way or another. King Sennacherib is about to get the worst whipping of his life for he is touching Gods’ Anointed people and land. The same kind of shellacking he is about to receive we can deliver to our spiritual enemies in the name of Jesus. We say along with King Hezekiah “We are trusting in the LORD our God!”
