OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS IS AS FILTHY RAGS

Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to this intriguing and enabling study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. We are such a blessed people to have the Words of God, the thoughts of God to guide our way into all the blessing. Who but our God would know what Words would just as applicable now as then? Who but our God could Anoint all of His Words which when coupled with our faith would bring manifestation? The featured picture is of the State House in Concord New Hampshire to remind us to pray for all in authority. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text, in you guess it, the Book of Isaiah. Please continue to read out loud, yes, out loud.
Isaiah 64:4-7 (NKJV)
4 For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.
5 You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned– In these ways we continue; And we need to be saved.
6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.
7 And there is no one who calls on Your name, Who stirs himself up to take hold of You; For You have hidden Your face from us, And have consumed us because of our iniquities.
As we move ahead into verse six of our Bible text, we find the Prophet Isaiah continuing to confess the sins of the people. He declares them to be as an unclean thing due to sin. They have not given attention to God, they have not rejoiced in Him, they have not pursued His righteousness, and they have not walked as He walks (in His ways). Today without the Blood of Jesus we have no righteousness, but praise the Lord, Jesus is our righteousness. He took our sin, our unrighteousness, and gave us His righteousness. Before Jesus, God made a way for His people, with animal blood year to year. Let’s take a look at verse six in the Message Bible.
Isaiah 64:6 (MSG)
6 We’re all sin-infected, sin-contaminated. Our best efforts are grease-stained rags. We dry up like autumn leaves— sin-dried, we’re blown off by the wind.
Isaiah continues confessing the sins of the people going into verse seven. He laments that no one is calling upon the name of the Lord. Dear ones this is an area we all must be vigilant about. There are many that appear to be calling upon the name of the Lord especially in Church but is it learned behavior, tradition or an expression of the heart? Are we stirring ourselves up to really engage the Lord? We must be very intentional not simply playing a part or meeting an expectation. It is very easy to fall into a rut and be complacent with the things of the Lord, really a taking Him, the things of God for granted. This can happen in our other relationships as well, like with friends and spouses. Look at what the Lord told Moses 700 to 800 years earlier.
Deuteronomy 31:16-18 (KJV)
16 And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them.
17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us?
18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods.
Have many in the Church gone “a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land”? The strangers are the heathen, the gods are anything that takes our focus off God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
