THE TITHE AN ETERNAL COMMANDMENT

Once again, we will be diving into this really popular topic of offerings (sarcasm) but first let’s review our anchor Scripture.
Nehemiah 12:44 (KJV)
44 And at that time were some appointed over the chambers for the treasures, for the offerings, for the firstfruits, and for the tithes, to gather into them out of the fields of the cities the portions of the law for the priests and Levites: for Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited.
The tithe is first mentioned as such in the time of Abram. The word tithe means, a tenth. The tithe is what belongs to God, already. From my teaching of January 22, 2025, “Special Edition – Tithing”, let us review what seems to be the origin of the tithe. I have heard it said that tithing is under the Old Testament and we New Testament believers are not required to tithe. This is a devilish lie of well Biblical proportions. The other lie is that we are not under the law but under grace usually follows right along with that demonic reasoning. One law was done away with by Christ and that is the Law of Sin and Death. When Adam sinned, he died spiritually immediately, and death entered his body. Jesus removed the law of sin and death (Genesis 2:17) therefore we are not under it nor subject to it. We have grace for repentance.
Also, we are not required to perform the various sacrifices those were fulfilled in Christ Jesus as well. However, we do commemorate them. That is what Communion has to do with. As just a brief rabbit trail, it seems to me that the terms Old and New Testament are unfortunate names for they imply that the “Old” Testament has passed away and a “New” Testament has supplanted it. That is not true. The Old Testament is simply older than the New Testament having come before it. The Old Testament is no less relevant today than it was in the time it was lived and written.
To reiterate, the word “tithe” means tenth. When we tithe, we give a tenth of our increase or income back to God, it is His. The tithe existed before the Law from the very beginning. In the Garden of Eden there was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This tree belonged to God, and they were not to partake of it. This was the tithe. They partook of the tree of good and evil, of the tithe, and look at the havoc to follow, even to this day. The same will occur in anyone’s life that robs God.
Abraham, who was before the giving of the Law to Moses on Mt. Sinai, tithed and his children after him. The following is the first mention of the tithe by name.
Genesis 14:17-20 (KJV)
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
TAKE HOME:
- The Tithe is a commandment to mankind for all time.
- The Tithe is one tenth, 10%, of our increase.
- The Tithe belongs to God, not paying the Tithe is robbing God.
