SALVATION IS NOT JUST A NEW TESTAMENT WORD OR CONCEPT

Welcome to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries and the continuation of our Bible Study titled “The Salvation Package”. The question is this, what does salvation mean? What does it mean to be saved? Is there really a salvation package? It seems to me that a common understanding is that when one is saved, they are going to Heaven not Hell when they die. It seems that the common message conveyed is that when we give our heart to the Lord, we go to Heaven someday, and in the meantime, we are to develop our character to be more like Jesus. Is that all that salvation or being saved means? I believe we will see as we move into this study that salvation is indeed a package with more than one item in the package. In fact, everything good, good as defined by God, is in the salvation package. Why isn’t the whole message of salvation preached and taught?
Thus far we have been exploring what changes when we leave the wilderness, bondage, impending wrath of God and move by choice receiving the gift of salvation, into the Promised Land. Everything changes, it could not be a starker black and white choice. In my example of the children of Israel leaving the wilderness and entering the Promised Land we saw that the way was led by the priest, in our case Jesus The High Priest, and we entered into a Blood Covenant as we entered the Promised Land. It cost nothing to move from one side of the Jordan to the other, it was free. However, there would be battles to move into the land and possess it. They won those battles without casualties so long as they stayed pure before the Lord and the same is true for us. Let’s look at the first use of the word salvation in the Old Testament and explore its meaning.
Genesis 49:18 (KJV)
18 I have waited for thy salvation, O LORD.
The word transliterated from the Hebrew to English is yeshûʿâ according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. This word means to be saved, delivered, aided, given victory, prosperity, health, and welfare according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. When we look at the root of this word, we find things like being preserved, having an avenger, a defender, being safe, and given victory. We also come across the word “succor” here which means help meet, one ideally suited to come along side.
Let’s explore this word further, it is a feminine noun meaning salvation, deliverance, help, victory, prosperity. The primary meaning is to rescue people from distress or danger. Help or security offered by fortified walls (a hedge), one’s welfare and safety, salvation by God, with reference to being rescued by Him from physical harm and being rescued from the punishment due for sin according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. Being a feminine noun conveys the idea that salvation gives the ability to reproduce. Looks rather New Testament don’t you think? God does not change. Let’s look at one more Scripture.
Psalm 91:14-16 (KJV)
14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
Did you notice that many of the words associated with salvation are in these few verses? You see salvation didn’t start with the resurrection of Jesus. Salvation for anyone who would worship Him, submit to Him, has always been available. I am not minimizing the Sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, His victory in Hell, and the Resurrection, these are momentous events allowing the full restitution of all things (Acts 3:21).
TAKE HOME:
- Salvation is not new; we just think it is due to incomplete teaching, the traditions of men and the doctrines of demons.
- A divorce of the Old and New Testaments is a tragic and costly mistake of the modern Church.
- Salvation, yeshûʿâ, occurs 78 times in the Old Testament.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
