Welcome back to our study of 3rd John dear brothers and sisters in Christ and any others that are joining with us. The Apostle John is one of the original twelve, commonly referred to as the Apostle of love and he is the only one to not die a violent death. I wonder if there is a connection there. Without further ado let’s move to our text and see what the Lord has for us.
3 John 1:5-8 (ESV)
5 Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are,
6 who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.
7 For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles.
8 Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
By way of a reminder, the Apostle of love is writing to a beloved spiritual or natural son named Gaius. As we examine verse six, we find him commending Gaius for his faithfulness, his generosity towards those who are taking the gospel out from the local Church. We know that Gaius was generous, and perhaps others with him, due to this phrase “in a manner worthy of God”. They are not sending them out with less than enough, or just enough but more than enough. Do you, does your Church have that mindset? Let us all be reminded of the following Scripture.
Galatians 6:10 (ESV)
10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
The word “love” in verse six is agapē which is Divine love. Once again, this Divine love which God is and so are we, is obedience to Scripture, selfless lifestyle, and walking out the Blood Covenant. These people Gaius was generous toward testified before the Church of his generosity. From what we know of this man, I suspect that he would have preferred to have remained anonymous. The main reason for Gaius’ generosity was that these men were going out in the name of Jesus to proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom and His righteousness. He points out that these brethren went out without taking anything from nonbelievers or those who were not Jews. It sounds like they would not as opposed to being open to donations from gentiles. I am not sure of the significance of that.
The Apostle goes on to say that it is very important to receive those that are going forth for the same of Jesus, the Christ. Verse eight ends with the phrase “that we may be fellow workers for the truth”. Have you noticed the theme of the Truth? Before I end for today, let’s review what he is saying with the use of the word “truth”. Jesus is the Truth, the Word of God is the Truth, the Holy Spirit (who points to Jesus/the Word) is the Spirit of Truth, and love (God is love, Jesus is the second person of God) is the Truth. I don’t think we would be doing harm to the text by saying that the Apostle is repeatedly pointing to Jesus, the Word, the Holy Spirit who enables and teaches us. Finally, but not least is love (agapē/agapaō) which is obedience to the Word, being selfless, and walking in Blood Covenant.
TAKE HOME:
- It is very important to be generous to those who are taking the gospel out from the local Church.
- We are to receive with generosity those who travel for the sake of the name, the name of Jesus, the Christ.
- We are to know the Word, the Truth, and walk in it.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
