Welcome back to this informative and revealing study of The Kingdom of God. I mentioned this quite some time back that some make a differentiation between the Kingdom of Heaven and the Kingdom of God. The Gospel of Matthew is the only book in the Bible to repeatedly use the term “Kingdom of Heaven”. Some say that this term refers to the place, Heaven. I do not share that view and I think if you give it study you will also see that the terms Kingdom of Heaven and Kingdom of God are interchangeable. Perhaps we can think of it this way. Part of the Kingdom of God/Heaven is in the place called Heaven and today part is in the people of God on the earth. During the 1000-year reign of Christ the Kingdom of Heaven/God will not only be spiritual in the earth in God’s people but geographical. Let’s go to our anchor Scripture today in Youngs Literal Translation and then move forward.
Matthew 6:33 (YLT)
33 but seek ye first the reign of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you.
As I have mentioned many times this is a command from our Lord and King. Are we looking for Him to reign over us and in turn we reign over our assigned areas? We are under the King’s dominion, and we are to bring the things in our jurisdiction under our dominion under Him. Righteousness, peace and joy are to be manifest in us and through us for all to see. We are to walk as He walked and walks doing all according to the Words of the King. Now, let’s resume our teaching of what Jesus says about the Kingdom.
John 18:33-38 (ESV)
33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me?”
35 Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”
37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in him.
This is after Jesus has been arrested and just a few hours before the Cross. Pilate the Roman Governor of the area is interrogating Jesus. He is trying to find out why the religious leaders want Him crucified. Pilate asks Jesus if He is a king. Jesus answer is interesting. Jesus says my Kingdom is not of this world. We know this already from the following Scripture.
Luke 17:20-21 (ESV)
20 Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming in ways that can be observed,
21 nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
When we studied this passage, we discovered that the term “in the midst of you” was saying that the Kingdom is within you and among you, but it is not a designated geographical area. Jesus told Pilate, if my kingdom were of this world my servants would be fighting to prevent me from being turned over to the Jews, not the Romans. Verse thirty-seven is most interesting. He tells them and us that He was born to be a King and to be a witness to the Truth. The Truth is Jesus, the Word, the Holy Spirit, and love. Those who are His who are walking in the light of the Word listen to Jesus, have ears to hear. Neither the ruling Romans nor the ruling religious Jews had ears to hear. Unfortunately, it is no different today in the political and religious mountains.
TAKE HOME:
- In this present time, the Kingdom of God/Heaven is not a designated geographical place but is present in and among believers.
- Are you fully submitted to the reign of King Jesus seeking His direction day in and day out? Are you reigning over your assignments?
- Those who are of the Truth (born of incorruptible seed, the Word of God) listen to Jesus, the Truth.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
