A WELL OF TRUTH
WHAT ABOUT HOPE?

Greetings dear friends and fellow believers and welcome back to our Sunday teachings titled; “A WELL OF TRUTH”. Today I am going to deal with the Truth of ‘hope’. Before I move into our subject matter, please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible. Thank you for sharing. You are a vital part of this Ministry and are taking your place (in part) of advancing the Kingdom of God. If you did not share you might ask yourself, why? We love you either way and there is nothing you can do about it. A short time ago Donna and I were listening to one of our favorite teachers and the idea of Bible ‘hope’ was briefly discussed. The Bible definition of the ‘hope’ I am referencing is a confident expectation or anticipation (Greek Strong’s Number 1680). Confident in who, in what? God, the Word of God! As I was thinking about this, this morning, before starting to write I had the following thought: gifts of the Spirit (1 Cor 12 & 14) are tools to build the Kingdom but faith, love, and hope are spiritual laws that govern those gifts. Spiritual law is as certain to manifest as physical laws when triggered. Now, back to the teaching I mentioned above. The teacher went on to make the point that ‘hope’ is one of the big three based on the love chapter.
1 Corinthians 13:9-13 (KJV)
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
This is hopefully a familiar passage of Scripture for our readers. The word ‘charity’ in the thirteenth verse is the same word translated most commonly as love (agapē according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary). So, we are talking about the God kind of faith, the God kind of hope, and the God kind of love. You have undoubtedly noted that love and faith are fruits of our spirit given us of God for our development. But what about hope? As we think about this question let’s look at another Scripture and see if it might help us.
2 Timothy 1:6-7 (KJV)
6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Hope is a function of our will, a part of our soul (distinct from our spirit but connected) that we use to decide what we will receive, what we will believe, and what we will think on, speak, and do. As verse six about tells us this process is assisted by the Holy Spirit (“the gift of God). The phrase in English “sound mind” is a disciplined mind. We know that ‘fear’ which is the manifest presence of our spiritual enemies. I we give fear a place, receive him (thought upon, spoken, and acted upon) that choice (we make) will block the function of love. Love is the fuel of faith therefore faith ceases to function, and hope is out the window. We have failed to discipline our mind in the face of the wiles, schemes, deceptions, tricks of the enemy. We have taken our eye off Jesus, off the Word, and turned aside to other words and are like Adam and Eve are serving another god. As I prepare to end for this week let’s look at another familiar passage.
Hebrews 11:1-3 (KJV)
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
The word ‘hoped’ in the first verse is the root word from which the word ‘hope’ in 1 Corinthians 13:13 is derived. The meaning is to confidently expect (Greek Strong’s Number 1679).
I will pick up right here next week Lord willing.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Receive the blessing in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (MSG)
24 GOD bless you and keep you,
25 GOD smile on you and gift you,
26 GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.
