HEALTH, HEALING, AND MIRACLES – PART NINETEEN
Sunday – July 15, 2018, Av 3, 5778

Greetings and welcome back to this wonderful study of the ministry of Jesus which by the way is what our ministry is to look like. I am not talking about your pastor or evangelist, I am talking about you and me. As the title of this study suggests the best place to start is with the maintenance of health. Scripture tells us that the Word of God is the very best prescription, the very best medicine, not only for our spirit man, our soul, but also our physical bodies. Today I will be discussing Jairus’s daughter which as you will recall is intertwined with the account of the woman with the issue of blood. First, we will look at this account through the eyes of Matthew.
Matthew 9:18-19, 23-26 (KJV)
18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise,
24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.
25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.
It is very interesting in this account that we do not learn the name of the “certain ruler” nor the daughter. The King James text suggests that the rulers (Jairus) daughter is already dead but a more accurate interpretation would be that she was as good as dead or very near death. The ruler makes a faith statement and never backs away from it in this account nor any other account. Jairus prophesies that if Jesus will come and lay His hand on the daughter “she shall live”. The word “hand” in our text, verse eighteen, is singular in number and feminine in gender. He did not ask Jesus to lay hands on her but His hand, which is interesting. Perhaps this is a reflection of the faith that Jairus had in Jesus, faith that the Anointing on Jesus from the Father would heal his little daughter. On other occasions Jesus did lay His hands (pleural) on people. The significant issue I want to bring forward is that the word “hand” is feminine in gender indicating the capacity for productivity in our hands. The hand in Scripture is frequently symbolic of power whether that be God’s Power or our power (that which we have power or authority over). In this case the laying of His hand on the daughter restored life and health and so shall our hand received in faith bring the same result. When did the daughter get restored to life? When Jesus declared that she was not dead but sleeping. When Jesus took her by the hand she awakened from sleep not death and arose or stood up.
Please read the text very carefully and notice there is no begging or really even asking either by the ruler of Jesus or Jesus of the Father. The ruler made a faith decree, Jesus made a faith decree, and the daughter arose. Now, let’s take a look at portions of this in Mark.
Mark 5:21-23 (KJV)
21 And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
In this text we find out the ruler’s name is Jairus and again we find the faith statement or decree. In the King James Version of the Bible the words in italics are not in the original manuscripts but were added by the translators. Therefore, the words “I pray thee” were not spoken by Jairus. Let’s follow along with Mark a little further.
Mark 5:35-36 (KJV)
35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
We now find out that the daughter which was near death has now died. Jesus commands Jairus to not be afraid but only believe. Jairus does not say a word. How many of us could have done the same? Now, let’s go to the house.
Mark 5:38-42 (KJV)
38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
Again, in verse thirty-nine is when the girl is raised from the dead and healed and in verse forty-one is where He wakes her from sleep. Finally, let’s see what Luke has to say about this event.
Luke 8:41 (KJV)
41 And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus’ feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:
In the verse above we find the word “besought” which does not mean to beg or ask but it means to call for or call for one to come along side to comfort. Finally, let’s look at the actual returning of life, health, and the awakening of this little girl and how it was all in very close succession.
Luke 8:52-55 (KJV)
52 And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.
53 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.
54 And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.
55 And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.
Verse fifty-two and fifty-five belong together for the phrase “Maid, arise” means to awaken not raise from the dead. Also, notice that each sentence starts with the conjunctive “and” indicating these events are all one event.
One last reminder from Jesus, our Lord and Master.
John 14:12 (KJV)
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
Until our next publication, I speak this Scriptural prayer for your life right now, receive it in the name of Jesus, confess it, and walk it out with thanksgiving.
Exodus 15:26 (KJV)
26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
