MILK, MEAT, AND THE WORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

Wow, this picture is a lifetime ago. This would be 1980 El Paso Texas at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. I sure would not fit in that suit right now, however Patti has plans for me, not sure they are plans for good. Now, let’s turn our attention back to our wonderful Bible Study from the Book of Hebrews. We will start by reading our primary text.
Hebrews 5:12-14 (KJV)
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
I left off yesterday with a review of the “first principles of the oracles of God” and we can now come to the conclusion that if these are not well anchored we are by definition “unskilful in the word of righteousness:” Next week as we move into Chapter six of Hebrews we will find that he author had some other basic principles in mind and we will cover those as well. The use of the imagery of milk and meat is an analogy of a person maturing in the natural. Spiritually, people still on and requiring milk are never learning and implementing the principles of the knowledge of God that are fundamental to further progress. Anyone who has been to college knows that in order to take certain courses prerequisites are necessary otherwise the new material would make no sense and be completely indigestible. This is going on in the Church and we must ask, who is at blame here? Is it the leadership or the congregants? I believe it is the teachers, the leadership, and that is because these leaders don’t understand it themselves. This didn’t start yesterday, this has been going on for centuries, denominational dogma has been developed at the expense of the Truth. This resulted in the decimation of the Church. Brother and sister, it is our assignment to bring order out of this chaos and in the process the Church will once again exercise our God given authority and Power in the earth. When that happens, the Church will explode. We will not have to dream up outreaches and all that foolishness of man. Prepare to ride the largest wave of the Word and the Spirit ever.
Notice from our text that those on milk are unable to discern good and evil. This is a serious situation when the whole Church is on milk. Sometimes maturity spiritually is assigned based on age or time in the Church and just as in natural life those may not be markers of a mature Christian. There must be those in the congregation that can discern good and evil. We must not assume that person is the Pastor, he or she may just have the title of Pastor and may have been a Pastor for fifty years still on milk themselves. Remember, the inability or refusal to discern good and evil is what brought about this mess. Adam and Eve partook of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Let me give you a little insight into my walk with God. What I have found over time is that even though I received teaching and modeling from some well recognized leaders there were always gaps in the teaching. Imagine if you will a large puzzle on a table. As you look at the puzzle you see places with perhaps five or six pieces together making some sense (perhaps showing most of a flower), however there are large gaps between these things that make some sense by themselves. There are lots of loose pieces that are unconnected and it is unclear where they might fit. This is the Church today.
We must study, we must be diligent, and we must very boldly come to the Throne of Grace and make it clear we are serious about seeing this whole puzzle. We must make it clear to God that we are wanting out this milk, and get on the strong meat. We are fed up with the poverty, sickness, and disease which is crippling the Church. In Jesus name we are going to walk in the full authority Jesus bought back at such a staggering price and we are going to exercise the full Power of God according to His leadership to show the exceeding glory (goodness) of God. Pass the strong meat and don’t baby me if I spit and choke, I will get it down and I will change and I will be the image and likeness of my Father pleasing Him building the Kingdom of God.
