PRIDE PRECEDES DISASTER
MEMORIAL DAY

Greetings to all and welcome back to our Bible Study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. Please take a moment and share this teaching by any means at your disposal to expand our reach with the Truth. Your sharing is important to us but infinitely more important to the Kingdom of God and your treasure in Heaven. Today is Memorial Day. The featured picture today depicts fallen soldiers in defense of these United States. Memorial Day was first celebrated subsequent to a proclamation by General John Logan on May 30, 1868. The purpose of this day was to memorialize, to remember, those who had fallen in the Civil War. The south initially refused to acknowledge this memorial until after World War I. Over time it has come to be an honoring of all war dead and finally who have died. Now, let’s turn our attention to the primary Bible text for today in the Book of Isaiah. I hope you are reading out loud, you know why.
Isaiah 16:6-9 (GW)
6 We’ve heard of the arrogance of Moab’s people. They are very arrogant. We’ve heard of their boasting, arrogance, and conceit, but their boasts aren’t true.
7 That is why Moab will wail. Everyone will wail for Moab. Mourn and grieve over the raisin cakes of Kir Hareseth.
8 The fields of Heshbon and the vineyards of Sibmah wither. Rulers of the nations have cut off their grapes. The grapevines {once} reached as far as Jazer and strayed out into the desert. Their shoots had spread out over the sea.
9 I will cry for the grapevines of Sibmah as Jazer cries for them. I will drench you with my tears, Heshbon and Elealeh. The shouts of joy for your ripened fruits and your harvest will be silenced.
We have been looking at ancient Moab (present day Jordan) for a few days and it has not been clear why the judgment of God is coming upon them. I believe as we look at today’s text it is brought into clear focus. Moab had become filled with pride, arrogance, so much so it was known far and wide. Remember, pride is the cardinal sin, the sin of Lucifer. Let’s take a brief look at how God views the sin of pride.
Proverbs 16:18 (GW)
18 Pride precedes a disaster, and an arrogant attitude precedes a fall.
The pride, the arrogance of Moab certainly has preceded its destruction as we see in the text. You see, God is giving a lengthy warning, there is ample time for repentance and stay the Hand of God. It is very difficult for the proud and arrogant person to humble themselves. Being clothed with humility, humbling oneself under the Hand of God is strength and protection.
Proverbs 6:12-19 (GW)
12 A good-for-nothing scoundrel is a person who has a dishonest mouth.
13 He winks his eye, makes a signal with his foot, {and} points with his fingers.
14 He devises evil all the time with a twisted mind. He spreads conflict.
15 That is why disaster will come on him suddenly. In a moment he will be crushed beyond recovery.
16 There are six things that the LORD hates, even seven that are disgusting to him:
17 arrogant eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill innocent people,
18 a mind devising wicked plans, feet that are quick to do wrong,
19 a dishonest witness spitting out lies, and a person who spreads conflict among relatives.
Let’s see what Jesus has to say about pride, arrogance.
Mark 7:18-23 (GW)
18 Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand? Don’t you know that whatever goes into a person from the outside can’t make him unclean?
19 It doesn’t go into his thoughts but into his stomach and then into a toilet.” (By saying this, Jesus declared all foods acceptable.)
20 He continued, “It’s what comes out of a person that makes him unclean.
21 Evil thoughts, sexual sins, stealing, murder,
22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, cursing, arrogance, and foolishness come from within a person.
23 All these evils come from within and make a person unclean.”
Dear ones we have to diligently guard what we allow into our thoughts, that we not take defiling (unclean) thoughts as our own. Whatever we have taken we will meditate and say at some point. Unclean or defiling thoughts and words bring defilement and opens the door to our spiritual enemies perhaps even separation from God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Receive the blessing in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (MSG)
24 GOD bless you and keep you,
25 GOD smile on you and gift you,
26 GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.
