REPENTANCE FOR PRIDE

Greetings dear and precious sons and daughters of the Heavenly Father, brothers and sisters with Christ Jesus, inhabited by and empowered by our Helper the Holy Spirit. Welcome back to this exciting and empowering Bible Study of the Book of Isaiah. Please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. Thank you for sharing. The beautiful featured picture today was provided by our good friend and man of God, Joe Getchell Jr. Thank you, Joe. Now let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text from the Book of Isaiah and continue reading out loud. Remember, faith comes by hearing, not seeing or thinking, but hearing. Hearing what? The Word of God. This is not just hearing a sound or a casual gathering of information, but a listening to understand and do. Let’s ask ourselves, are we doing that (listening to understand and do) or are we just curious about what follows?
Isaiah 26:7-11 (TLB)
7 But for good men the path is not uphill and rough! God does not give them a rough and treacherous path, but smooths the road before them.
8 O Lord, we love to do your will! Our hearts’ desire is to glorify your name.
9 All night long I search for you; earnestly I seek for God; for only when you come in judgment on the earth to punish it will people turn away from wickedness and do what is right.
10 Your kindness to the wicked doesn’t make them good; they keep on doing wrong and take no notice of your majesty.
11 They do not listen when you threaten; they will not look to see your upraised fist. Show them how much you love your people. Perhaps then they will be ashamed! Yes, let them be burned up by the fire reserved for your enemies.
I will finish up with verse nine and move into verse ten. You will remember that much of this Bible Book has to do with what Gods’ people have done wrong, and what His judgment is concerning the wrong in the presence of no repentance. There is generally an interval of time between the pronouncing of the judgment and the receiving of the judgment. From the committing of the sin, to the warning about the sin and its consequences, and even the pronouncing of the punishment or consequences of the sin, repentance turns it all away. Let’s take a brief look at the case of Hezekiah in this regard.
2 Kings 20:1-6 (KJV)
1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.
2 Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying,
3 I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.
4 And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying,
5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.
6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.
Hezekiah was a good king however he took too much credit for his success and became lifted up in pride. We all must guard against this. In the preceding passage we don’t really know why God repented or changed His mind. It was not the tears, tears are not repentance, a change of the heart is repentance. Remember Esau who could not come to a place of repentance even though he shed many tears, it was about him not his relationship with God.
Hebrews 12:16-17 (KJV)
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
Now, see the difference between Esau and Hezekiah.
2 Chronicles 32:26 (KJV)
26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Receive the blessing in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (MSG)
24 GOD bless you and keep you,
25 GOD smile on you and gift you,
26 GOD look you full in the face and make you prosper.
