Greetings dear saints of God and any who will become saints of God. The Bible calls all those who belong to God saints, both Old and New Testament. God is so good dear ones, saints. In the New Covenant, in Christ Jesus we are sons of God, joint heirs of the entire Kingdom of God, we are priests unto our God, we are kings under the King of Kings Jesus the Christ. This is not only for the “sweet by and by” but right now, this is all ours, are you walking in it by faith. Remember, all is by faith in love. All physical manifestation as its origin in the spiritual. Now, to our study of the Kingdom of God and our anchor Scripture.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Do we see this as a command or a laudable (praiseworthy, admirable, commendable) goal? It is a command. If the Lord Jesus said it, commanded it, in His earthly Ministry and He only said what the Father told Him to say we are fully able. It would be unjust for God to command something we are incapable of doing, not authorized to do, not equipped to do. Is our God unjust? To be just is synonymous with being righteous. Is our God righteous? Now, let us more to text for today picking up from yesterday.
Matthew 20:20-23 (KJV)
20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
These people were hearing Jesus teach on the Kingdom so much that they were expecting a physical kingdom in the earth anytime. In spite of His teachings they did not really know, understand, the plan of God, the redemptive plan that had to precede any physical kingdom. What about you and me, do we have the cart before the horse as well? They did, however, understand what a kingdom looks like and operates like. They understood there was a king, and that king ruled over a domain. They understood that there were rankings in this kingdom, everyone is not the same, the same rank, even the same jurisdiction of authority. Are you aware of this? Let’s look at verses twenty-two and twenty-three in the NIV.
Matthew 20:22-23 (NIV)
22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?” “We can,” they answered.
23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
Notice the phrase about baptism is not mentioned and that is not unique to the NIV but the Amplified and New Living Translations as well. The cup that we all must drink is total submission to the will of the Father. Remember Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Matthew 26:39 (KJV)
39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.
TAKE HOME:
- The cup that Jesus drank from, and we must drink from as well is total submission to the Father. Real submission is when we yield with a willing attitude to the will of the Father to do something contrary to our will or desire.
- Our rank or ranking in the Kingdom of God is directly related to our faithfulness to the occupation assignments given.
- There are things that Jesus does not know and cannot disclose to us but are in the Father’s authority/knowledge.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
