COVETOUSNESS

Greetings dear and precious saints, the redeemed of the Lord and welcome back to our study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text for today and read it out loud. Yes, out loud, you know why.
Isaiah 57:17-21 (KJV)
17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him: I hid me, and was wroth, and he went on frowardly in the way of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.
19 I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him.
20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.
21 There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.
As we pick up with verse seventeen, we find God mentioning the sin of covetousness and the intense anger it stirs up in Him. He is still talking about this rebellious group who have turned to idols were even giving their children to Molech. They turned not only to other gods but to the arm of the flesh all of which has a destructive outcome. As you will recall this is one of the big ten.
Exodus 20:17 (KJV)
17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
Looking back at our primary text, verse seventeen, we find that this people in the face of stealing, killing, and destroying in their lives persisted in their iniquity with no change of heart. Let’s look at this word “covetousness” transliterated from Hebrew to English meaning to profit, gain, dishonest gain, and covetousness. The word refers to illegal or unjust gain or profit which God’s people were to avoid (Gen. 37:26; Ex. 18:21; 1 Sam. 8:3; Ps. 119:36; Prov. 28:16). It is further qualified in some contexts as gain obtained by violent means (Judg. 5:19; Mic. 4:13) or profit gained with selfish goals in mind according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament. Let’s look at our primary text in the NIV where covetousness is translated as sinful greed.

17 I was enraged by his sinful greed; I punished him, and hid my face in anger, yet he kept on in his willful ways.
18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him,
19 creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the LORD. “And I will heal them.”
20 But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud.
21 “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.”
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
