MY COVENANT WITH THEM
Greetings dear and precious saints of the Most High God, brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome back to our study of the marvelous Book of Isaiah. The featured picture today is of an old Church building in the State of Nevada. The purpose for this series of Church building pictures is to remind each one of us to pray for the Church (not the building), the body of Christ. Thank you for your introspection and your intercession. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
Isaiah 59:19-21 (NASB)
19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun, For He will come like a rushing stream Which the wind of the LORD drives.
20 “A Redeemer will come to Zion, And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,” declares the LORD.
21 “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from now and forever.”
Today we will progress from verse twenty into twenty-one. In Biblical Numerology twenty is the number of redemption and we see that clearly in the verse. The Redeemer that at that time will come to Zion, Jerusalem, is none other than Christ the Lord. He came to turn the children of Jacob, Israel, from their sin.
Matthew 15:24 (KJV)
24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
As we know from Scripture, our vantage point centuries later many in Israel did believe upon the Christ but many did not and the ruling religious class rejected Him to the point of playing a key role in the Crucifixion. The Romans (Gentiles) also had an equal or accessory role in the Crucifixion of Christ. Thus, Jesus died for Jew and Gentile alike. The number twenty-one has to do with exceeding sinfulness. What could be more sinful than crucifying the Lord? It seems to me there is a gap in time between verses twenty and twenty-one. Twenty is dealing with the coming of Jesus some two thousand years ago and verse twenty-one has to do with the time when the Jews turn back to God, recognizing Jesus as the Christ. This would be at the end of the Tribulation period going into the Millennial Reign of Christ following His Second Coming.
The Father in verse twenty-one goes on to say that He has a Covenant with them which started in Genesis twelve with Abram or really one could make the argument it started in Genesis 3:15, fifteen is the number of provision. The provision of a Redeemer in this case. Listen to the Father speak in the New Testament Book of Hebrews.
Hebrews 8:8-12 (ESV)
8 For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”
Here we see again that they, the Jews, broke Covenant with God. God has never forsaken His Covenant with them. Really, they had rejected God long before Jesus arrived and for the most part continue to reject Him as Savior. However, the day is coming and is at hand when they will turn. By the way we already have this Covenant in full force.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
