KINSMAN REDEEMER

Greetings dear and precious saints of the Most High God, brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome back to our study of the marvelous Book of Isaiah. The featured picture today is of an old Church building in the State of Nebraska. The purpose for this series of Church building pictures is to remind each one of us to pray for the Church (not the building), the body of Christ. Thank you for your introspection and your intercession. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.

Isaiah 59:19-21 (NASB)

19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun, For He will come like a rushing stream Which the wind of the LORD drives.

20 “A Redeemer will come to Zion, And to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,” declares the LORD.

21 “As for Me, this is My covenant with them,” says the LORD: “My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring’s offspring,” says the LORD, “from now and forever.”

As you will recall, I have launched into a discussion of the idea of a kinsman redeemer as foreshadowed in the Book of Ruth. Boaz was the kinsman redeemer for Ruth a Moabitess, a Gentile. They are a part of the lineage of Jesus in the tribe of Judah. Naomi is the mother-in-law of Ruth and her deceased husband is Elimelech and Mahlon is the deceased husband of Ruth, the son of Naomi.

Ruth 2:1 (KJV)
¹And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.

To jog our memories let’s review the definition of the word “Redeemer” from verse twenty of our primary Bible text. It means to redeem (according to the Oriental law of kinship), i.e. to be the next of kin (and as such to buy back a relative’s property, marry his widow according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. All of this happened in the life of Ruth and all of this has happened in lives with Jesus as our Kinsman Redeemer. We are redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb (Jesus). All was purchased and returned to the Kingdom of God through the Blood, the payment of Christ Jesus, and we are now joint-heirs with Christ. And, last but not least, we, the Church, are the bride of Christ. Now, back to Ruth and Boaz.

Ruth 4:9-10 (KJV)
⁹And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi.
¹⁰Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

In consultation with and with the witness of the city elders Boaz purchases all that was of Elimelech, and Mahlon, and took her (Ruth) as his wife. Naomi and Elimelech had two sons who died the other was Chilion.

Ruth 4:13-17 (KJV)

13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.

14 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.

15 And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.

16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.

17 And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
