EIGHT DAYS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING – PART TWO
Sunday – March 31, 2024, Adar Bet 21, 5784
Greetings dear friends, brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome back to the Sunday Bible Study. Today is traditionally known as Easter Sunday. It is better referenced to as Resurrection Sunday. This day should more accurately be celebrated on the 17th of Nisan on the Hebrew Calendar which starts at 6 p.m. the 24th of April on our Gregorian Calendar. It is common that Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday (commonly called Easter) are treated as three separate events when in reality they are one event with each part being vital to the whole. My emphasis today will focus primarily on the Crucifixion (Good Friday) and the Resurrection (Easter).
Just a little review from last week. Palm Sunday is the 10th of Nisan, Jesus was in and out of Jerusalem the next five days and hangs on the cross the 13th of Nisan, is buried just before twilight the start of the 14th of Nisan and rises before dawn the 17th of Nisan. This was a Sunday, the first day of the week on the Hebrew Calendar. As Jesus died physically and spiritually at 3 P.M. on Mt. Moriah the 13th of Nisan and His soul/dead spirit descended in Hell, many sacrificial lambs for Passover were also dying to be consumed the 14th of Nisan. It was eight days from the setting aside of the Lamb of God until the Resurrection signifying a new beginning. A new beginning for all of mankind. Eight days that changed everything. As referenced last week all of this has its real origins before the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).
We will examine this event of Jesus entering Jerusalem from the Gospel of John. This is recorded in all four Gospels. Let’s look at the timeline relative to Passover.
John 12:1 (KJV)
1 Then Jesus six days before the passover came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead.
On this same day, six days before Passover we find Mary anointing the feet of Jesus with a pound of expensive spikenard. Six is significant for it is the number of man and the anointing of the feet indicating that the gospel of peace is about to go forth into all the earth.
John 12:3 (KJV)
3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Another woman will anoint His head two days before Passover (Mark 14:1). Jesus is the head of the Church which is about to be born.
Mark 14:3 (KJV)
3 And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.
The alabaster box is made of stone, Jesus is the stone. When this box was broken it allowed the ointment (Anointing Oil) to come forth. When Jesus was broken for us it allowed the Holy Spirit, the Blessing, to return and be available for all peoples.
Now, the 10th of Nisan is misnamed Palm Sunday.
John 12:12-15 (KJV)
12 On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.
14 And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written,
15 Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt.
What about the branches of the palm trees. The palm is symbolic of righteousness. Ps. 92:12 likens the righteous person to a palm tree in that nothing can sway a palm tree from perfect uprightness and neither does it change from season to season according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament.
Psalm 92:12 (KJV)
12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.
What about the term or name Hosanna? This name or term comes from the Hebrew meaning save now, help now, or save we pray thee. It became a word of common acclamation (Ps. 118:25), and later a common form of wishing safety and prosperity, Save and prosper, O Lord according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament. They were crying Hosanna looking for a king to throw out the Romans but His mission was much greater. What about Jesus riding on a donkey which is prophesied in Zechariah 9:9. A donkey is considered a lowly animal. This time Jesus was not coming as a conquering King but as a sacrificial lamb. However, next time they will see Him enter Jerusalem as a conquering King riding a mighty white steed.
Revelation 19:11-16 (KJV)
11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Now Resurrection morning (before daylight). This is important for He was to be in the earth three days and three nights. Had He arisen after dawn the Scripture would have been broken.
John 20:1 (KJV)
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.
At first she is sad and upset but then came great joy.
John 20:15-17 (KJV)
15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.
16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
He returns on the very same day as His Resurrection to the disciples and the Church is born.
John 20:19-22 (KJV)
19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.
20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
The teaching last week and this is quite incomplete but many of the essentials have been covered and I hope this brought great insight and renewed joy of the Lord.
Lord willing, I will pick up with fresh revelation (light) next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
