Greetings dear friends, partners, passersby, and welcome back to the study of the Bible Book of 1st John. This is one of the five Books of the Bible authored by the Apostle John, the Apostle of love. This Book has been heavy on love (agapē/agapaō), light (revealed Word), and now sin (the way of Satan). At this time let’s shift our attention to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
1 John 5:14-18 (KJV)
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.
We have just a bit of unfinished business with the following Hebrews 10:26 passage before moving on.
Hebrews 10:23-28 (KJV)
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, (bold added)
27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
I want to deal for just a moment with the phrase “if we sin wilfully” in Hebrews 10:26. According to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament this is a voluntary, intentional act. Refers to sins committed willingly, those done designedly and deliberately in the face of better knowledge. This is not a sin springing from deceptions but our own will in the face of the knowledge it is contrary to the Word of God.
As we look at verse seventeen of our primary text the Apostle tells us that unrighteousness and sin are the same thing. In addition, he assures us there is sin that does not lead to death. The sin leading to death is that which is purposeful and voluntary in the face of better knowledge. The voluntary part means without the coercion of Satan and his group, we made the choice completely apart from him. If done in coercion and/or in dark deception than death would be unjust.
In verse eighteen of the primary text the Apostle returns to the Truth, idea, that those born of God do not practice sin. That does not mean that they do not ever sin, it means that do not sin on purpose. They do not practice in your face sin. Those who are begotten of the Father or born again make every effort to be free of sin. In that sinless state the wicked ones do not have access to us. Yes, they will come knocking on the door. Don’t open the door!
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
