HAGGAI – INTRODUCTION

Greetings dear saints of God and students of His Word. Welcome back to The Three Minute Word and the initial teaching on the Bible Book of Haggai. This Book focuses around the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem which was in ruin. According to the Bible Timeline published by Rose Publishing, the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed when Judah fell to the Babylonians around 586 B.C. King Cyrus who was foretold in Scripture as being the main authority allowing the exiles to return to Jerusalem and to rebuild the Temple.
Isaiah 44:28 (KJV)
28 That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
As we go along you will see there is some overlap between King Darius (522-486 B.C.) and King Cyrus (559-530 B.C.). In the following passage we see that King Darius is mentioned first although he came after King Cyrus. It is clear from the Isaiah reference that God attributes the credit to King Cyrus.
Ezra 6:1-5 (KJV)
1 Then Darius the king made a decree, and search was made in the house of the rolls, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon.
2 And there was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of the Medes, a roll, and therein was a record thus written:
3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, Let the house be builded, the place where they offered sacrifices, and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid; the height thereof threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof threescore cubits;
4 With three rows of great stones, and a row of new timber: and let the expenses be given out of the king’s house:
5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Haggai is one of the minor Prophets, minor in terms of the length of the Book named for him. Not minor in what he had to say on behalf of God. He is one of twelve minor Prophets. He is a contemporary of the Prophet Zechariah. According to Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Haggai), it is not clear that the Prophet Haggai is the author and the date of the completion of the manuscript is not clear as well. It is thought that the manuscript was likely completed by one of his disciples. The Book records events around 520 B.C. but the estimates when the manuscript was completed range from 515 B.C. to 417 B.C., quite a range.
There is a problem. King Cyrus issues the decree allowing the Jews to return to their land and rebuild the Temple in 538 B.C. The Temple isn’t completed until 516 B.C., twenty years later in the reign of King Darius I. More on this to come.
