Greeting dear children of God and welcome back to this instructive study of the Bible Book of Haggai. The Lord is so good to give us a lamp for our feet, and light for our path (Psalm 119:105). Remember the words of the Apostle Paul.
Romans 15:4 (KJV)
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Romans 15:4 (NIV)
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
As we are preparing to dive into our study today of the Book of Haggai which is just as applicable to Gods’ people today as in that day, I want to say a word about Bible hope as in Romans 15:4. Bible hope is not like worldly hope that is hit or miss. Bible hope is an expectation that is certain to manifest when the laws of the Kingdom are met. It is not automatic because you are born again. Now, let’s turn to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
Haggai 1:1-4 (KJV)
1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.
3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
As we pick up in verse two today, we hear the Prophet Haggai declaring the Word of the Lord to the people at Jerusalem. Although the people, at least some of them, have been in the land since the decree of King Cyrus in 538 B.C. and it is now 520 B.C. the complete rebuilding of the Temple remains. Eighteen years have gone by! All that was needed was made available by King Cyrus. They are without excuse. Yet, they were making excuses according to our text, saying it wasn’t time to build the Lords’ house. Could we say that this people were lukewarm at best for the things of God. The Temple at that time was the center of life for those who worshipped Jehovah God. That is not to say they were not about other activities such as we are today but the core of their lives was with the Temple. This is where the various offering, including the sin offerings, took place and of course the teachings of the thoughts, Words, and ways of God.
Then in verse four of our text the Lord asks a question. The people are saying it is not time to build the House of the Lord. The Lord asks, is it time to build and dwell in your “ceiled” houses while my house lays waste? I hope we all know the proper answer to God’s question. As I close let’s look at the word “ceiled”. According to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament this is a verb meaning to cover with panels. It indicates covering or paneling a structure with some material (1 Ki. 6:9; 7:3, 7), especially the Solomonic temple and palace. This was considered a sinful, social luxury by later prophets (Jer. 22:14; Hag. 1:4). It seems that this paneling was considered a luxury item and perhaps sinful when the house of the Lord did not share in the same or superior luxury appointments. Selah.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here with our study of Haggai next Saturday. The Lord is good, He is not the source of your problems, and He cannot lie!
