WHAT ABOUT TONGUES? – PART ONE

Greetings dear children of God and welcome to our Sunday Bible Study, today looking at the topic of speaking in tongues. To say that this is a controversial topic would be an understatement of colossal proportions. I have used an image of the Bible Book of Isaiah for this teaching for that is where many, including myself, believe this is first mentioned, prophesied. Let’s look at that passage.
Isaiah 28:9-13 (KJV)
9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
11 For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13 But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
Parts of this is commonly quoted or alluded to but not verse eleven which is the prophecy concerning the coming manifestation of speaking in tongues. As we examine verse eleven let’s identify the “he” and “this people”. The “he” is the Lord Jesus commonly known in the Old Covenant as the Lord of Hosts. “This people” are the Church, you and me dear ones. All of the gifts of the Spirit outlined in 1 Corinthians Chapter Twelve can be found in the Old Testament except speaking in tongues and interpreting tongues. This is a new gift in the New Testament and a way that Jesus speaks to and through His people. Perhaps the following verse adds clarity.
Isaiah 28:5 (KJV)
5 In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,
TAKE HOME:
- Speaking in tongues was foretold in the Old Testament.
- Tongues would start with the Church.
- Tongues is one way that Jesus speaks to His people.
