Greetings Precious saints of God, brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus and welcome back to this instructive study of 1st John. The Lord is so good.
James 1:13-17 (KJV)
13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.
15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Let us get this down inside of us, God is good, the problems in our finances, our bodies, and so on is not authored by God, nor the devil, we ourselves are the author by the thoughts of our mind and the words of our mouth. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
1 John 2:28-29 (KJV)
28 And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.
29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
Yesterday we spent some time with verse 28 and the idea of abiding in Him. The additional caveat I would add is to remember that anywhere you see Christ Jesus, or Jesus, or Him you can substitute “The Word”, so Christ Jesus would be the Anointed Word, Jesus or Him, would be translated the Word in our minds. So back to verse twenty-eight we can translate “abide in him” as abide in the Word. Now, let’s move forward into verse twenty-nine. We will be examining the word “righteousness”. First, we will look at the verse in Holman Christian Standard Bible. I find it useful many times to examine the various translations. Sometimes a certain word will resonate more than another. Having said that never remember who our Teacher is and without Him we will have zero revelation (light). We might have information but not revelation. Information does not build faith but revelation (rhema) does.
1 John 2:29 (HCSB)
29 If you know that He is righteous, you know this as well: Everyone who does what is right has been born of Him.
The word translated from Greek to English as righteousness is feminine in gender meaning to be right, just, that which is right, conformable to right, pertaining to right, that which is just. This is expected by the one who sets the rules and regulations whereby man must live, whether that be society or God. Therefore, it means that which is expected as duty and which is claimed as a right because of one’s conformity to the rules of God or society according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament.
So, based on this information, we might say that we know He (Jesus by extension God) is right and just and all who do right (according to the Word) and are just and according to the Word are born of Him. As we examine ourselves, is our conscience clear before Him? Let us ask this question, am I doing things according to the Word of God and am I just (fair) with my fellow man?
Micah 6:8 (KJV)
8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
