WHAT ABOUT TONGUES? – PART SIX
Video link: https://youtu.be/3NR9hUUhKec
Greetings dear children of God and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study. Today is part six of the teaching on tongues. We have discovered or reviewed that speaking in tongues was prophesied to come in Isaiah 28:11 and was coming to the Church through Jesus, the Messiah. We learned that tongues were a way in addition to Scripture that God was to convey knowledge to His people. We also learned that when we don’t know how to pray, that praying in tongues is praying the perfect will of God. Today I want to help us differentiate between the tongues that manifest first with being filled with the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues. The Apostle Paul writes the following to the Church at Corinth.
1 Corinthians 12:1 (KJV)
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
Some of you may be very familiar with tongues and all that I am writing but it is wise for all of us to review the gold standard (Scripture) from time to time that the Truth not slip away.
Hebrews 2:1 (KJV)
1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
The tongues that are manifest as evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit and therefore the Power Jesus spoke of is of a personal nature. By that I mean, it is to be used predominately during our times of personal prayer. Now, let’s see about the nine gifts of the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:7-11 (KJV)
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
Verse eleven is a key here. All persons filled with the Holy Spirit have a personal mostly private prayer language but only some as God choses have one or more gifts of the Spirit. The purpose of “divers kinds of tongues” is for God to convey a message (generally in a Church Service) to His people. An interpreter is needed in the congregation to convert the tongue to our native language. This is considered equivalent to prophecy and will always be designed by our Heavenly Father to build up, comfort, and encourage.
TAKE HOME:
- We are not to be ignorant concerning Spiritual things.
- We are to consistently review even what we think we know so the Truth does not slip away.
- Our personal prayer language is separate from the gift of tongues.
- The combination of the gifts of tongues and interpretation is designed by God to build up, encourage, and comfort.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
