Welcome to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries and this ongoing study of 2nd John. What a book so rich with Truth from Heaven through this Apostle of love. Without further ado let’s plunge into our golden text.
2 John 1:3-5 (KJV)
3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
Today we will move forward into the fourth verse of our golden text. Remember this is a letter from the Apostle John, “the elder” to the “elect lady” or “chosen lady” and her children. We speculated due to the last sentence of the letter that perhaps this was a sister-in-law. Now, in this fourth verse the Apostle is telling her that he has and is rejoicing because her (the elect lady) children are walking in the truth. It is a great cause for rejoicing when we see our own children and the children of those, we love walking in the truth. The NLT gives us the insight that the Apostle has met this children and is thus a firsthand witness to their walk in the truth.
2 John 1:4 (NLT)
4 How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded.
I am sure this was a great joy for the Apostle and perhaps even more so for the elect lady to hear this testimony concerning her children. Hopefully you will recall that the truth and love are inseparable. Be reminded that the Truth is Jesus, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. These are inseparable from love, Godly, Divine love (agapē/agapaō). Love being obedience to the Word with selfless motives, standing on the firm foundation of Blood Covenant with God. As we move forward in our study of the text, we find that the Apostle is talking about this God and His children level love. Obedience to all the Truth on which we have light (revealed knowledge) is love (agapē/agapaō). Now, let’s move forward in our text.
2 John 1:5-7 (KJV)
5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
6 And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
John is telling the elect lady that what he is writing about is nothing new, it has been present from the beginning. John is speaking about loving one another and reminds her that this is an old commandment. First the command to love God.
Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV)
5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Next the command to love our neighbor.
Leviticus 19:18 (KJV)
18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.
Jesus speaks directly concerning this command under the law in the following passage.
Matthew 22:36-40 (KJV)
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
I will address this a little further next Friday.
TAKE HOME:
- It is a great cause for rejoicing when we see our own children and the children of those, we love walking in the truth.
- The truth and love are inseparable. Be reminded that the Truth is Jesus, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. These are inseparable from love, Godly, Divine love (agapē/agapaō). Love being obedience to the Word with selfless motives, standing on the firm foundation of Blood Covenant with God.
- The command to love God and our neighbor has been from the beginning. Until the Cross and Resurrection after the treason of Adam man was unable to express Godly love (agapē/agapaō).
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
