Welcome to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries and this ongoing study of 2nd John. What a book so rich with Truth from Heaven through this Apostle of love. Without further ado let’s plunge into our golden text.
2 John 1:7-9 (KJV)
7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
Last Friday I left off with verse seven of our anchor text after chasing a few rabbits so to speak. Today let’s pick up verse eight and the admonition to look at ourselves. This looking to ourselves is much like saying be on guard, prove all that is said, believe only what you prove by Scripture NOT other sources. Here is the seventh and eighth verses in the Passion Translation of the Bible.
2 John 1:8 (PassionNTPsa)
7 Numerous deceivers have surfaced from among us and gone out into the world, people who will not acknowledge Jesus Christ coming as a man. These deceivers are antichrists!
8 Be on your guard so that you do not lose all that we have diligently worked for but receive a full reward.
Perhaps you have heard me say many times that we must be good Berean’s proving all things.
Acts 17:10-11 (NKJV)
10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
Are we good Berean’s? Are we on guard. Listen to Jesus concerning the end of days, and His coming.
Matthew 24:4 (NKJV)
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.
It seems that the Head of the Church is making it clear that deceptions will be more prevalent as the end nears. Keep in mind He is talking to the Church about the Church. This deception will be in the Church. How can we get insight or clarity. What we hear sounds right, sounds like the gospel but is it producing Kingdom of God results? If not, there is a deception involved blocking fruitfulness. I don’t believe that most of these deceptions are intentional. The deceiver is deceived and is teaching the traditions of men and the doctrines of demons as the Truth. These deceptions generally don’t keep you out of Heaven, but they keep you broke and sick and from reaching your destiny and receiving a full reward at the Judgment Seat of Christ. The following passages are the antidote at least in part.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (NKJV)
1 “Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the LORD your God will set you high above all nations of the earth.
2 And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God:
2 Timothy 2:15 (NKJV)
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
TAKE HOME:
- We must study Scripture rightly dividing the Word of Truth.
- We must observe to do all the commands of God.
- We must guard against deception, being careful of what we hear, and proving all that we hear against the Word of God before thinking it, speaking it, and doing it.
