THE DOCTRINE OF CHRIST

Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our study of 2nd John. What a powerful insightful Book inspired of the Holy Spirit through the hand of the Apostle John. Now, let’s dive into our anchor Scripture.
2 John 1:9-11 (NKJV)
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him;
11 for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
We are not being told to avoid all but us four and no more. We are being told not to have fellowship with those who deny the Doctrine of Christ, that Jesus came in the flesh as fellow believers. We must have contact to have influence. Remember we are to arise and shine (Isaiah 60:1) to Church and world alike. Verse ten is not telling we can’t have unsaved people to our personal home or visit their home (Jesus did this all the time), but we are not to have them in our Meeting Places and greet them as fellow believers for they are not. We are to be gracious and receive them as we would any unbeliever with kindness and love.
This is a sobering passage because it tells us that if we treat them as a fellow believer we share in their evil deeds. That is to say we become guilty of what they are guilty of which includes not believing that Jesus is the Messiah come in the flesh. This would include all the major religions of the world, and many of the unsaved unaffiliated with a religion. It would not include those that are in the True Church, Body of Christ. As we close for today and our study of this Book, let’s look at the last two verses.
2 John 1:12-13 (NKJV)
12 Having many things to write to you, I did not wish to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
13 The children of your elect sister greet you. Amen.
The Apostle John is brimming over with things to say to the elect lady. It is not clear why he does not include it in this or another letter. Of this I think we can be sure, these “many things” were not things the Holy Spirit wanted shared. Likely not Truths that are for all men, for all time, under all circumstances. This brings us to the final verse of this second Epistle. Remember this is addressed to the elect lady and her children. I have taught this as being to one lady and her children. Others see this as to the Church at large and the children as the members. This final verse says that the children of “your elect sister” greet you giving me the impression he is talking about blood and spiritual sisters as individuals.
TAKE HOME:
- To have the Father and the Son (and of course the Holy Spirit) we must abide by the doctrine of Christ, Jesus come in the flesh.
- To embrace as fellow believers those who do not confess, believe, practice Jesus as Christ come in the flesh is sin and we share in their evil deeds which includes the rejection of Jesus as Lord and Savior.
- The Truth is that Jesus is the Messiah come in the flesh making provision for the redemption, salvation of all who receive Him as such.
As the Lord wills, next Friday will be a standalone teaching titled “Shortcut to the Ditch”. There will be another standalone after that as well title unsettled at the moment. Then we will pick up the 3rd John. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
