Welcome back to this dynamic teaching of the wonderful and precious Bible Book of Isaiah. Please pause for a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. Thank you so much for sharing. The featured picture today is of two pileated woodpeckers. I don’t know about you but to me these appear to be prehistoric. This picture was taken by Marilyn Stevens who takes many beautiful pictures especially of birds. You can find her on Facebook, many of her pictures are stunning. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text in the wonderful Book of Isaiah continuing to read out loud.
Isaiah 41:21-24 (NLT)
21 “Present the case for your idols,” says the LORD. “Let them show what they can do,” says the King of Israel.
22 “Let them try to tell us what happened long ago so that we may consider the evidence. Or let them tell us what the future holds, so we can know what’s going to happen.
23 Yes, tell us what will occur in the days ahead. Then we will know you are gods. In fact, do anything—good or bad! Do something that will amaze and frighten us.
24 But no! You are less than nothing and can do nothing at all.
Those who choose you pollute themselves.
Now, the Lord challenges His people who have been worshiping idols, false gods, and other men to show what they can do. Notice in verse twenty-one the word “King” is capitalized indicating deity, so it is the LORD who is continuing to speak, to challenge these idols and His people. He challenges these idols to talk about what and why things happened in the past or perhaps tell us about the future. Then in verse twenty-three, the LORD exclaims, just do anything to “amaze and frighten us”. We know these idols can do nothing, or do we? Who or what are our idols? Perhaps it is our job, maybe the government. How many times have we heard, “well, I live on a fixed income”? Is this the way or will of God? Do we not know, have we not been taught, to eschew all idolatry and to lean totally on the Lord our God? The LORD points out that these idols are less than nothing! Let’s look at the 24th verse in another translation.
Isaiah 41:24 (KJV)
24 Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought: an abomination is he that chooseth you.
An abomination is something the Lord finds disgusting (moral), an abhorrence, especially idolatry according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Let’s all purpose to examine our lives to determine if we have any idols.
