Greeting dear children of God and welcome back to this instructive study of the Bible Book of Haggai. The Lord is so good to give us a lamp for our feet, and light for our path (Psalm 119:105). Remember the words of the Apostle Paul.
Romans 15:4 (KJV)
4 For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Romans 15:4 (NIV)
4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
Now, let’s turn to our primary Bible text reading out loud.
Haggai 1:1-5 (KJV)
1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,
2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.
3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?
5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
Remember that it was King Cyrus who issued the decree in 538 B.C. that the Jews could return to the land and rebuild their Temple. He made all that was needed including the return of the precious and sacred instruments of the Temple. However, now we find ourselves in the second year of the reign of King Darius which would be 520 B.C. Apparently, they have not even started working on the Temple, and if they have, it is not a significant amount of work. The Temple will not be completed until 516 B.C. Certainly, does not seem to be a priority for the Jews who were already at Jerusalem and those who returned following the decree of King Cyrus of Persia. Consider that this is center of Jewish life for those who worshiped God. This is the only place that an acceptable sacrifice could be made.
As we further examine the first verse we find the following, “came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the sone of Shealtiel, governor of Judah”. Zerubbabel the governor of Judah is a central figure in the rebuilding of the Temple. Once again, I want to address the phrase “the word of the LORD”. The Word of the Lord in the Old Testament is none other than the one we now call Jesus. Perhaps you have heard the phrase that the Old Testament is Jesus concealed and the New Testament is Jesus revealed. The Scripture is clear that Jesus is the Word. The Word of God, the written Word and the person of Jesus are inseparable.
John 1:1-3 (KJV)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John 1:14 (KJV)
14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here with our study of Haggai next Saturday. The Lord is good, He is not the source of your problems, and He cannot lie!
