IMMUTABLE – PART FOUR

Greetings precious, Blood bought and cleansed saints of God and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study. Today I will continue delving into the Blood Covenant Joshua and the princes of Israel made with the Gibeonites. This was a Blood Covenant gained by subterfuge on the part of the Gibeonites and a failure on the part of Joshua and the other leaders of Israel to consult with the Lord.
Joshua 9:14-15 (NKJV)
14 Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions; but they did not ask counsel of the LORD.
15 So Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.
Joshua and the other leaders of Israel entered into a Blood Covenant with the Gibeonites based on what they saw, human reasonings, without consulting the Lord. Have any of us done this in our lives? This could be a marriage, a car loan, a home loan, where we live, where we work and what we do for work, the selection of a Church. We make all these decisions and then go to the Lord for His blessing. Isn’t that the cart before the horse? Back to our study texts. The Israelites allowed themselves to enter into a Blood Covenant with the Gibeonites which was contrary to the will of God. Just as God will not fail to keep His Word, He expects those that are His to keep their Word whether it was entered into righteously or not. Well, it is 400 plus years later and there is famine in Israel. Why?
2 Samuel 21:1 (KJV)
1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
King Saul had broken the Blood Covenant between Israel and the Gibeonites. Perhaps you will remember that Joshua had warned the Israelites concerning this.
Joshua 9:19-20 (GW)
19 But all the leaders said to them, “We have sworn an oath about them to the LORD God of Israel, so we cannot touch them now.
20 We must let them live to avoid {the LORD’S} anger because of the oath we swore.”
King David now approaches the Gibeonites to make this breach of contract (Blood Covenant) right.
2 Samuel 21:3 (KJV)
3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the LORD?
The Gibeonites responded that they did not want silver or gold, or the house of Saul, or that any other man in Israel be killed. The following passage is what they required of Israel.
2 Samuel 21:6-9 (KJV)
6 Let seven men of his sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king said, I will give them.
7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.
8 But the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she brought up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
9 And he delivered them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
Lord willing, I will pick up this study right here and conclude it next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
