IMMUTABLE – PART THREE
Video link: https://youtu.be/8PeW5Bj-qrs
Greetings precious, Blood bought and cleansed saints of God and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study. Today I will continue delving into the Blood Covenant Joshua made with the Gibeonites.
Joshua 9:15-16 (KJV)
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.
16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
They were duped for they did not consult with the Lord. Have any of us ever done this or perhaps pushed away the Lord’s counsel?
Joshua 9:14 (NIV)
14 The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.
Before we delve further into this particular account of Blood Covenant, I want to point out three (of ten) major elements of Blood Covenant pertinent to this account.
- Blood Covenant is Perpetual. Look at the Blood Covenant God made with Noah and all mankind after the flood. As soon as Noah got off the Ark Noah offered a burnt offering to the Lord, a blood sacrifice (Genesis 8:20). Then in Genesis 9:16 God spells out terms of this everlasting Blood Covenant. We see this idea of a perpetual or unending Blood Covenant again with regard to our own salvation in Hebrews 13:20.
- Blood Covenant is honored in subsequent generations. We see this in the very account we are discussing and in 1st Kings 15:4.
- We find that breaking Blood Covenant brings death. We already discussed this in a preceding teaching when I cited Romans 6:23 (the wages of sin is death or said another way the breaking of Blood Covenant brings death).
As we move forward with this account of a Blood Covenant, although conceived in sin on both sides it remains immutable. We next pick up on the consequences some 400 plus years later in the time of King Saul, and King David. There is a famine in the land of Israel and David goes before the Lord to see why and what must be done.
2 Samuel 21:1 (KJV)
1 Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
Is event of King Saul and or those in his command killing Gibeonites I think we can take the Lord’s Word for it. This was a clear breach of the Blood Covenant Joshua and the princes of Israel made with these people some 400 or so year earlier.
Lord willing, I will pick this study up right here next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
