WE ARE THE KINGDOM WITH GREAT POWER

Welcome back to this ongoing study of the Kingdom of God. This was a main focus of Jesus’ teaching and doing and thus should be ours as well. Jesus was the sample son, the One who showed the Church to be born on Resurrection Day how to operate. We are sons in our order to build the family name, the name of Jesus, the Kingdom of God. Jesus commanded that we were to do as He did and even greater things (John 14:12). Why? He has gone to the Father, and we are here to do the work of God, of the Kingdom of God.
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
I have pointed out many times that this Scripture is a command not a give it a try. We are fully equipped. Now to our next study text telling us more about how the Kingdom of God works.
Mark 9:1 (KJV)
1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.
You likely recognize that this is just days away from Jesus going to the Cross. In the preceding chapter Jesus is teaching them about what is to come shortly. It is here that we find this famous exchange.
Mark 8:27-29 (KJV)
27 And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?
28 And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.
29 And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.
Immediately following this Jesus teaches them of His death and Resurrection. What comes right before our Mark 9:1 text?
Mark 8:36-38 (KJV)
36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
38 Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
Jesus is warning the people gathered and His disciples that they will be tempted to be ashamed of Him and of course this happens. Then Jesus talks about coming “in the glory of his Father with the holy angels” which would seem to point to the Second Coming of Christ (not the rapture). I think we could even say the Judgment Seat of Christ which happens in Heaven just before His return to earth with us to setup His Kingdom for a 1000-year reign. Jesus then pivots to an entirely different time in our Mark 9:1 text. What did Jesus mean by saying some with Him that day would not see death until “they have seen the Kingdom of God come with power”. I believe this is referring to the Day or Feast of Pentecost following His Resurrection and ascension to Heaven. The Kingdom of God was birthed on the same day as Jesus’ resurrection (John chapter 20) but was not endued with Power until the Day of Pentecost.
TAKE HOME:
- Jesus commanded that we are to do as He did and even greater things (John 14:12). Why? He has gone to the Father, and we are here to do the work of God, of the Kingdom of God.
- Jesus coming in the glory of his Father with the holy angels is referring to the Second Coming when He comes with the armies of Heaven (angels) and with us to setup His Kingdom in this earth.
- The Kingdom of God coming in Power is referring to the day of Pentecost when those who would were and it continues today are endued with Power from on high.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Saturday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
