THE LOVE OF GOD OUR SAVIOR TOWARDS MAN

Greetings dear one as we prepare to continue our study of Divine love (agapē/ agapaō), the love that can only be expressed by the Trinity and the Fathers’ children. Let me remind us of what this love is and looks like. First this love is a person, our Heavenly Father and then us in His image and likeness. Second it sits on three sturdy legs. Divine love is obedience to the Word of God. Divine love is selfless, it is not about me, it is about you independent of your actions. And certainly not least, it is the recognition that we walk in Blood Covenant with God.
Once again let’s review the definition I believe the Lord gave me when I was first studying this idea of divine love many years ago.
“Love is a deep and constant interest in a person. It is a function of the will. It is right (righteous – Biblical) and reflects or is born of the blood covenant. This love is not dependent on the recipient in any way but is solely dependent on the giver.” Now, let’s once again review the eight words translated from Greek to English as love in our King James Bible but are not the Divine love (agapē/ agapaō) we are exploring.
- “phileō” which means to be a friend, G5368,
- “thelō which can be translated love but generally means willing, G2309,
- “philadelphia” meaning brotherly kindness, G5360,
- “philargyria” means avarice or love of money, G5365,
- “philandros” is love of a spouse, G5362,
- “philoteknos” is a love of one’s children, G5388,
- “philanthropia” is kindness to mankind, G5363, and
- “philandelphos” is a fondness for the brethren, G5361
I have discussed the first six on this list and will now
move to the seventh word on our list. This brings us to philanthropia which is Strong’s Number G5363 conveying the thought of fondness, benevolence, and kindness towards mankind in general.
Titus 3:3-5 (KJV)
3 For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.
4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Our focus is verse four in the foregoing passage. One might think this is surely referring to agapē/agapaō, but it is not, it is philanthropia indicating God’s fondness for mankind, His benevolence, and kindness towards His man. Of course, this is in addition to agapē/agapaō. This brings us to the final word translated as love in our King James Bible giving the impression of a God level of love and not the natural level it really represents. This Greek word is philadelphus Strong’s Number G5361 indicating a fondness for the brethren, those of one’s same group as a fellow Christian. It means to be friendly towards, sympathetic too, and to have a natural love which is not agapē/agapaō love.
1 Peter 3:8 (KJV)
8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
The Amplified version of the Bible brings forward more clearly the idea being presented concerning how we relate to our brothers and sisters in Christ.
1 Peter 3:8 (AMP)
8 Finally, all [of you] should be of one and the same mind (united in spirit), sympathizing [with one another], loving [each other] as brethren [of one household], compassionate and courteous (tenderhearted and humble).
TAKE HOME:
- Divine love is obedience to the Word of God. Divine love is selfless, it is not about me, it is about you independent of your actions. And certainly not least, it is the recognition that we walk in Blood Covenant with God.
- Philanthropia, which is Strong’s Number G5363 conveying the thought of fondness, benevolence, and kindness towards mankind in general. Titus 3:4 (KJV) 4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
- Philadelphus Strong’s Number G5361 indicating a fondness for the brethren, those of one’s same group as a fellow Christian. It means to be friendly towards, sympathetic too, and to have a natural love which is not agapē/agapaō. 1 Peter 3:8 (KJV) Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous:
Lord willing, I will resume right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
