Welcome to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries and our ongoing study of 2nd John. A book so rich with Truth from Heaven through this Apostle of love, John one of the original twelve. Without further ado let’s plunge into our golden text.
2 John 1:7-9 (KJV)
7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8 Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
Last Friday we left off talking about verse seven. The Apostle warns the elect lady and us that many deceivers are entered into the world, they deny that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, and these deceivers are antichrist. I think the word “antichrist” speaks for itself but to be sure let me say it is a person who denies that Jesus is the Christ, the Anointed One, the Messiah, the savior of mankind. A scary part of this verse is those “who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh”. Some believe that Jesus operated as God in the earth which would be denying He came in the flesh and to my thinking really complicates the crucifixion.
There are many who say that Jesus was fully God and fully man in the earth. That is true today but not when He walked the earth. In the earth for His earthly Ministry He laid aside what made Him God (capitol G) that is all knowing, all powerful, and everywhere present as well as His knowledge of eternity past. He came to understand who He was and what His mission was but that came the same way it does for us. And following the crucifixion He was restored fully as God only with a glorified body. In this way we are now, and in the future, to be just like Him except we are little gods, not all powerful, all knowing, or all places present at once.
An interesting aside here is that in the beginning God (the three persons of God) said let us make man in our image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). However, they made Adam with a physical body and breathed of their Spirit into that body. None of them had a body, they were Spirit. We know from Revelation 13:8 that Jesus, the second person of God was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (before or concomitantly with Adam). This gives us some insight into the knowledge of God concerning past, present, and future things as it concerns time and this creation.
I don’t believe that God made man to fail any more than He created Lucifer and a third of Heaven’s hosts to rebel. Concerning mankind, He either knew they would sin, or it was possible, and Jesus agreed to be the sacrifice of redemption. It seems to me that He has seen already from the first day seen the entire timeline but at no point interfered with anyone’s freewill. That is self-control my friend. Well, I chased a rabbit or two today. One last thing before I conclude. It was brought to my attention by a faithful friend and scholarly reader that there is an alternative view of this letter than the one I have taken. Let’s look at verse one.
2 John 1:1 (NKJV)
1 The Elder, To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all those who have known the truth,
I have viewed this letter, epistle, as written to a specific woman concerning her children either natural or spiritual or both. An alternative view, which you can find in commentaries, is that the elect lady is the Church at large and her children are the individual persons comprising the Church or body of Christ. It is rare, very rare, that I consult commentaries when I am writing. I teach the Bible from the Bible. I rely upon the Holy Spirit to guide me into the Truth. Now, let’s look at our take home for today.
TAKE HOME:
- There are many deceivers, many antichrists in the world, even in the Church.
- Jesus, the Second person of God, came into the earth functioning as a man, remained sinless with the help of the Holy Spirit, and with the help of the Holy Spirit paid the price of sin for all mankind.
- God knows the end from the beginning but never interferes with our freewill. That dear friends is self-control.
