WALK IN THE TRUTH

Welcome back to our study of 3rd John dear brothers and sisters in Christ and any others that are joining with us. The Apostle John is one of the original twelve, commonly referred to as the Apostle of love and he is the only one to not die a violent death. I wonder if there is a connection there. Without further ado let’s move to our text and see what the Lord has for us.
3 John 1:1-5 (NKJV)
1 The Elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:
2 Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
3 For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.
4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers,
Thus far we have seen that the Apostle of love refers to himself as an elder and to his spiritual son as beloved. We discovered that the term “beloved” is related to Divine love (agape/agapaō) and applies to other Christians for whom we have a special affinity. His love for Gaius is rooted, based upon the Truth. As we have studied in the past the Truth is Jesus, the Word, the Holy Spirit, and love. John loves Gaius as a fellow believer in Christ Jesus based on the Word. This is a Blood Covenant love, Covenant with the Father and with Gaius.
Next, we went into verse two and discovered that our thought life determines the health of our bodies and the course of our lives. What we focus on and meditate on is what we will have in our lives. There is no poverty or just enough in the Kingdom of God and there is no sickness and disease. Stealing, killing, and destroying is part of darkness and abundance is of the light (John 10:10). What we believe in our thought life and talk about is what we have, and it is our future. We decide. What have you decided?
This brings us to verse three of our text.
3 John 1:3 (NKJV)
3 For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.
The Apostle is elated to have received news that his friend and spiritual son is walking in the Truth. The New King James refers to the Truth that is in Gaius and that he is walking in that Truth. Let’s look at the Amplified Version.
3 John 1:3 (AMP)
3 In fact, I greatly rejoiced when [some of] the brethren from time to time arrived and spoke [so highly] of the sincerity and fidelity of your life, as indeed you do live in the Truth [the whole Gospel presents].
Gaius not only knew, had revelation of the Truth but was practicing the Truth. What about you and me? Before I end today let’s remind ourselves of exactly what knowing and walking in the Truth means. Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6), the Word of God is the Truth (John 17:17), the Holy Spirit is Truth (John 16:13), and love is Truth (Psalms 119:142). All of these point to the Word, to Jesus who is the Word. This man Gaius knew the Word, knew Jesus, and walked according to the Word, as Jesus walked.
TAKE HOME:
- We are to love those around us according to the Word of God, according to our Blood Covenant with the Father.
- Our thought life determines the health of our bodies and the course of our lives.
- We must know the Word of God, the Truth, and walk in it.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
