Greetings dear and precious people of God and welcome back to our study of the Kingdom of God. Before moving forward, a brief word about this tragic day. You may recognize the featured picture today as John Fitzgerald Kennedys’ motorcade on that fateful day in Dallas Texas when the world stood still. This tragedy took place 62 years ago on November 22nd, 1963. I still remember where I was when I first heard that our President had been murdered. Again, this serves as a reminder for us to pray for those in authority at every level across America. Not for their destruction but for their wisdom in righteousness to guide this Covenant nation.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 (KJV)
1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
I do not believe the Lord is at all pleased when we pray for bad things concerning our leaders because we disagree with their platform or because it violates Scripture. Remember Jesus died for all, and God loves all and it is His will that none perish. All have ample time and clarity of vision to choose salvation. Without salvation our home is Hell forever and that is too awful for anyone. When the wicked come to office it is because in one way or another, we the Church have allowed it, so rather than anger in the Church, repentance is the order of the day for the Church. Now, let’s direct our attention to our anchor Scripture for this study of The Kingdom of God.
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Remember that the lions share of Jesus’ Ministry was in teaching and demonstrating the Kingdom of God. Is that what the ekklesia is doing today? I want to remind us that seeking the Kingdom of God and His way of doing things is job one. I also want to remind us that this is a command therefore it is doable for all of us. Let’s ask ourselves, where am I focused? I will now move ahead into the next mention of the Kingdom of God in Scripture.
Luke 23:50-53 (ESV)
50 Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man,
51 who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53 Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.
We recognize that this took place immediately following the Crucifixion and death of Christ. This man Joseph who lived in Arimathea and was a member of the very council that demanded the death of Jesus. The Scripture is clear that he did not consent. Scripture calls him good and righteous. A man doing right before God. This man was looking for the Kingdom of God to manifest. It is not clear if he understood this would be a spiritual kingdom for the next 2000 years or if he was looking for a physical geographically defined kingdom. In any event he honored Jesus to the extent that he asked for the body, cared for the body, and placed Jesus’ body in his own tomb. This was a great risk to Joseph and expense.
TAKE HOME:
- Today is the 62nd anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
- We are commanded, exhorted, to pray for our leaders, pray for their good.
- What are we willing to risk and what expense are we willing to bear for Christ, for the body of Christ?
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
