Greetings and welcome to Part Seven of this teaching series on “Knowledge of the Truth”. This series will focus on the Truth, Divine Truth, and the importance of increasing our knowledge day by day. As we move forward, I want to remind us of a statement I made yesterday. This type of knowledge is not just knowing or having information about a thing but must be acquired by active pursuit and practice of the knowledge. Epignosis sits over, is superior to, and is the very core of knowledge and it is a functional knowledge, producing fruitfulness and multiplication. Being successful in the Kingdom of God is really no different than gaining success in the natural world. We will once again review the definition of knowledge from the following Scripture.
1 Timothy 2:4 (KJV)
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
The word translated to English as knowledge is the Greek word transliterated as epignosis, Strongs number G1922. This knowledge sits over, is superior to all other knowledge. It is the very core of all knowledge of the Truth, and it is functional knowledge, producing fruitfulness and multiplication. The definition of knowledge (epignosis) was garnered from The Complete Word Study Dictionary of the New Testament, Greek Strong’s numbers 1922, epignosis.
Let me contrast epignosis with Greek Strong’s Number 1108, gnōsis, which is a lesser form of knowledge. Gnōsis, conveys the idea of a more temporal and fragmentary knowledge. The following Scripture is an example of the “gnōsis” type of knowledge.
2 Corinthians 2:14 (KJV)
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
The idea communicated here is that as we give thanks to the Father, He will cause us to triumph in Christ. We always have a part. When we don’t do our part which is thanksgiving to God we will not walk in triumph. When people witness us moving from what appears to be defeat to a position of triumph, they now have a taste of the goodness of our God, and they will have some knowledge of our God. This may be a far more powerful witness to many in the world than any tract or sermon.
Every time that we persistently give thanks to the Father in any situation He will cause us to triumph in Christ, our Savior, and that will be a witness to others, or bring a knowledge, albeit it temporal and fragmentary, of our God. They will look and say, “Wow, you should have seen them; I thought they were down for the count but look at them now”. Perhaps they will want this ability to triumph over every bit of the curse and will receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. That is the bottom line in all we do. The following verse is another example of this temporal and fragmentary knowledge.
1 Corinthians 13:8 (KJV)
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
There is coming a time when the carnal, temporal, and fragmentary knowledge of this age will pass away and we will all have the more exact knowledge conveyed by the word, epignōsis. By “all” I mean “all” including the ones who have chosen or will choose the kingdom of Satan and hell and the ones who have chosen or will chose the kingdom of God and Heaven.
People before salvation all have a very rudimentary knowledge of God. After we receive Jesus as Savior it is the will of our Heavenly Father that we chose to expand our knowledge of the truth. That we move away from this rudimentary and fragmented level of knowledge (gnosis) to a more mature level of knowledge (epignosis). If I have not been clear let me explicitly say; the knowledge, this highest level of knowledge (epignosis) we are to gain is the knowledge of the Truth, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This knowledge will propel us forward in all areas of our lives. Having said this, we shall never “arrive” but will be progressing in the knowledge of God for eternity. The carnal mind is at war with God, and the things of God are foolishness to the natural man (1 Corinthians 2:14). BUT, once we know Jesus, we are alive to the things of God and all the Word becomes life to us.
TAKE HOME:
- Epignosis, Strongs number G1922 is the knowledge that sits over, and is superior to all other knowledge. It is the very core of all knowledge of the Truth, and it is functional knowledge, producing fruitfulness and multiplication.
- Before salvation we know about God but at and following salvation we are to know God.
- There is a worldly lesser knowledge which is temporal and fragmented and is not the basis of a pleasing fellowship with our Heavenly Father.
Lord willing, I will resume right here Monday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
